I played Rome Total War a bit.
The town management is a little too complicated for me though, so I play Warlock: Master of the Arcane now. |

">town management >complicated
how?" I dunno, I just found it tedious that you had to go to every town every turn, and just couldn't figure it out.
I want to blow stuff up every turn, not just manage towns and politics most of the turns. |

um
you don't
you can leave it on automanagement
or, you can follow this fancy guide
First off, build unit-production structures (barracks, stables). Then, build all the happiness-boosting buildings you can and tax the hell out of them. Every time you need to raise more troops, pop around and raise some of them in a few towns.
If you've got high squalor, just move your garrison out, let them rebel, and then take back the place. Once it's reconquered, enact a purge. Alternatively, for overpopulation, just recruit a few stacks of peasants, pile them into a boat and send them off to die at sea/before the walls of your current enemy.
For politics, don't bother. Allies will either up and betray you out of nowhere or stay neutral when you get into a war, an enemy suing for peace will just attack you in a few turns if you accept, and so on. The only worthwhile political treaty are trade treaties, which you can have a single diplomat or a few accomplish by sending him to broker such with all countries you aren't at war with.

"um

As nice as a guide is, if I have to look at a guide to know what the heck I'm doing, that's not very good game design.
I dunno, it just isn't the game for me, I found that it took forever to...Well, do anything really. |
