In my opinion, Chevelle is a decent band. Vitamin R and Closure are one of my favorite songs by them. I recommend giving those a listen before judging them.
As for the question at hand, you should listen to the classics before venturing further into rock. You should listen to some blues artists to further understand rock music. If you want to try listening to metal I recommend bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. If you want to listen to alternative you should listen to bands like Tears for Fears and R.E.M. Most 80's pop rock influenced alternative so it's kind of a hard choice on which is right and which is wrong. I know for sure the song "Shout" influenced pretty much every alternative band to date. Punk rock, however, is what alternative is based off of. You could just play it safe and listen to bands like The Ramones or something. Just give some of those bands a try before defining what genre you like best. |

| I can pick out a few songs I like by Three Days Grace (Chalk Outline, Scared, I Hate Everything About You). I just don't like the new guy. The new album almost makes them look really inexperienced, but I don't mean to insult your taste. |

@RaymondReddington I've never been big on classic rock. A part of me wants to like it because it's rock music, but part of me doesn't like it because most the singers back then were crap (AC/DC's singer, oh my god) but I like some classic rock.
If you like Chevelle, you should listen to "Ouija Board". |

My favorite songs for LP/SOAD/A7X,
Linkin Park - In My Remains/No More Sorrow System of a Down - Know Avenged Sevenfold - Save Me
Linkin Park is a good suggestion if you like the more electronic side of heavy/alternative rock, and implementing hip-hop was a great idea too. Albums 4/5 were more electronic, Albums 1/2 got the turntable and was a little more raw, album 6 was even more raw rock and album 3 is pretty unique on it's own.
System of a Down is good if you want an Armenian screaming his ass off about politics, drugs, the Armenian Genocide, and more cool and healthy stuff.
Avenged Sevenfold is good because it's like a more modern Metallica (sort of) and they have guitar solos in nearly every song, but I only recommend their third album and anything more recent than that. |

| System of a Down's best song has to be "Spiders" in my opinion. Linkin Park is a hard choice. Three Days Grace's new singer isn't that bad. Most people don't like him because he's not Adam, which is really dumb. Everyone forgets to realize he cowrote the song "Let You Down." |
