its because the stores that sell these components are going bankrupt and they need to raise the prices in order to get good profits
companies like intel and texas instruments internally produce their parts efficiently for a low cost |

"metal backplate = doesnt matter" Yeah, I can agree, if I ever built my keyboard, I would just ignore the backplate as much as I could and just use a PCB mount. PCB keyboards feel a lot more bouncy and light, too. |

"but keyboards are keyboards" That's what I used to say. Then I tried out a better keyboard and you simply cannot go back. It makes doing anything on the computer fun because you get the opportunity to type on an amazing keyboard. |

Well, there's inflation AND there's how much ignorant hardcore gamers and keyboard builders are willing to pay to get small parts. Keykaps should be 25 cents a key. But hey, keyboard builders don't care. ;o)

| It's cheaper to just buy a broken mechanical keyboard for $20 online, desolder all of the switches, then there you go, you got the PCB, controller, diodes, casing, and metal backplate for a mere $20. |

when I made home-made buttons I just took a little piece of wood, wrote stuff with a sharpie on it then put tinfoil and a metal spring on it
then you just put in the pins and BAM, YOURE DONE WITH A CHEAP 3 CENT BUTTON |

"Atleast my built-in, homemade Keyboard on a Windows XP is better than your expensive keyboard." Explain how it's better. Yours uses rubber domes to register a keypress and mine has high quality keyswitches with doubleshot PBT keycaps. |

"That better be some darn good keyboard you're making." I'm making a really good one. It will have a wooden casing, unlimited key roll-over, really nice doubleshot or dye-sublimated PBT keycaps, Cherry MX Clears with 50 gf springs, etc.
Maximum budget will be $150. I can afford it because I'll be selling most of my keyboards that I own now. |

"that's literally taking out all the components then putting them back in" No, it's called using components from other keyboards and building a custom one off of it. |

Oh, and about the keyboard I'm building, it will have a ergonomic split design where I can position the keyboard however I'd like, just like an ErgoDox.
I have a lot of the stuff right now. I have tons of diodes in my CM Storm Quickfire TK's PCB, two full sets of keycaps (that i hate but i could use them if i really needed to), my CM Storm Quickfire TK's controller, etc. |
