Context is key. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they're bad.

| Snowden is a traitor who leaked important documents but as an effect we're learning to cover our tracks better to prevent future incidents like it. I think. |

I dunno, haven't heard about Snowden before. I am generally okay with surveillance of the public as long as the people in charge are objective and business orientated. If the surveillance is kept secret, then there is not a problem in the first place. So I guess I'm against him releasing the information.
I haven't researched the topic in depth though =/ |

| IT DEPENDS. I LIKE SNOWDEN, HE IS OK. BUT I DON'T LIKE THE FACT THAT HE HID IN A COUNTRY THAT HAS A HORRIBLE HISTORY OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS. NOT TO MENTION STATE SPONSORED PROPAGANDA. |

Snowden isn't a Russian spy. He is an American who worked for the Government and felt obligated to release the stuff he did. He doesn't affiliate with Russia

incredible

The Government mass collects data of you, your friends, and your family.

Well you're right there. If America hadn't collected information on its citizens, Edward wouldn't have had anything to leak. Thus he made us aware of it, at least. |

"incredible"
Yeah, I'm not that focused on news at this stage in my life.
"Are you ok with the government invading your privacy?"
Yes. As long as it's not used against me, I'm fine. Seeing as I don't do illegal activities, I'm not concerned.
It's not like they're in my face about it. And it'd be paranoa to think that some government officials are interested in my personal conversations or browsing habits. |

this is a fallacy
just because it doesn't affect you doesn't mean it doesn't affect other people, ie journalists, businesses, etc
"It's not like they're in my face about it. And it'd be paranoa to think that some government officials are interested in my personal conversations or browsing habits. "
Except this is what's actually happening. Microsoft bought Skype just so the government can spy on it. |

Hm, while thinking about you've said, I think the main problem would be for things like people displaying revealing images of themselves, or disclosing super personal information.
Still, I'd like to trust government employees to maintain a professional attitude, much like medical professionals and the like. And would they really monitor every bit of information about everybody? Aren't there programs and technology that will monitor these communications for suspicious activity?
I dunno, I think there is a need for the government to monitor communications as it can do a lot of good, but the chance that the power will be abused does worry me. |

the problem is how does the program determine the danger of these communications, ie, how can it distinguish between a bomb threat and a paper about bombs |

"how can it distinguish between a bomb threat and a paper about bombs"
And if somebody uses a code word instead of bomb, that makes things more difficult. Many in the future there will be a program that can do this, maybe some sort of limited artificial intelligence, but I still see what you mean.
I guess what I really would like to see, is a leak about how successful these steps have been, and perhaps evidence showing any corruption or exploitation. Mere methods can always be framed in a bad light, but if they're being used responsibly and successfully, I have no problem. |
