There are a billion different subgenres of metal, and if I were to name them all, it would take all night, but here are a few of the main genres.
Heavy metal is often misunderstood. "Heavy metal" does not mean any metal that is heavy. It more applies to older hard rock (ex- kiss, black sabbath, and stuff like that)
Alternative metal is heavy music with alternative rock influence. It is generally radio friendly and you might hear a scream or growl every so often.
Nu metal is very similar to alternative metal with rap influence. Not sure about the difference between nu metal and rap metal.
"Nedal" is something I find pretty hilarious. Very grunge influenced. Dress up like geeks and write songs about lines from the simpsons - for real.
Hardcore is hardcore punk rock. Lots of screams. Like intense screamo,
Which brings me to screamo. It's screamy. I usually associate it with higher pitched screams. Usually pretty melodic. Hardcore influences. Most screamo bands use autotune. A lot of people don't consider it metal.
Metalcore is sometimes used interchangeably with screamo. I personally think metalcore is heavier and faster. Less autotune, more screams, growls.
Deathcore is death metal-influenced metalcore.
There are about four branches of extreme metal. Thrash metal is all about speed. Death metal has low tuned guitars, growls, and sometimes brutal, but often introspective lyrical focus. Black metal usually has higher tuned guitars, shrieks, often satanic themes, tremelo and sweep picking. Grindcore has hardcore, thrash, death, and noise rock influence.
Hope that helped :) |

Most are easily defined by looking them up, so Ill just post some of the main subgenres because my definitions are probs wrong anyway
Death Metal black metal doom metal thrash metal progressive metal sludge metal christian metal nu metal alternative metal djent deathcore metalcore
idk why im doing this, too many subgenres lol. Anyway, most are hard to define, as every band is different, and every genre generally has some band that doesnt go along the 'typical' sound of the subgenre |

That's not screamo, that sounds like scene lol. Real skramz isnt like that
"Metalcore is sometimes used interchangeably with screamo. I personally think metalcore is heavier and faster. Less autotune, more screams, growls."
Metalcore is extreme metal with hardcore influence and deathcore is death metal with hardcore influence |

screamo has nothing to do with metal hardcore isn't metal either it's punk screamo a spinoff of hardcore and post-hardcore bands like pg.99, circle takes the square, i hate myself, etc sounds nothing like metal
but hey misinformation rules the world and no one knows what screamo is anymore |

also let me correct this
"Metalcore is sometimes used interchangeably with screamo. I personally think metalcore is heavier and faster. Less autotune, more screams, growls."
metalcore used to be a more hardcore oriented genre until at the gates came along, and every metalcore band basically wanted to be melodic death metal with hardcore influence
"Deathcore is death metal-influenced metalcore."
deathcore is inspired by slam death metal, with more hardcore influence

Best way to learn genres I think is to browse around Metallum and see what you can find to listen to from various sub-genres.
That's how I learned and now I can basically tell you what sub-genre a metal song belongs to by listening to it. |

Okay guys since no one here knows what they're talking about, I'm gonna give an indepth look at extreme music.
1960s-mid 70s: Heavy metal, black sabbath etc Late 70s- people add punk rock into the formula, Speed Metal/NWOBHM is invented Early 80s- Thrash metal is created by turning up the aggression of speed metal, faster, yelled vocals, darker themes. Early 80s again: Some thrash metal bands incorporate the vocal style Growling, a low, bassy delivery with a sharp edge to it, this is the beggining of death metal Mid-80s: First wave Black Metal bands such as Bathory and Hellhammer being making music with a rawer sound Late 80s: Oldschool death metal, still alot of thrash influence, though tempo changes have been incorporated Early 1990s: Thrash metal has started to die out, two slowed down forms have emerged Sludge Metal- which is slow, stonery, hardcore punk influenced [take note, it did emerge even earlier] and Groove metal which was basically just pantera and some bands no one cared about Black metal evolved, taking a more melodic approach
And now for the other side of things Screamo, otherwise known as skramz is a form of punk music, derived from grindcore and powerviolence.

wikipedia is probably the best source of information for anyone who would rather ask people in a biased sub-forum.
