Ok so first off:
Those of you who don't support the death penalty are fools. And you who DO support the death penalty are just as foolish.
Abolitionists: You reject the fact that killing people can be beneficial to society because it either doesn't sound very nice to you, or you know somebody on death row, or simply because you've succumbed to social conformity like another one of The Herd. I reject the claim that the tax burden is such a huge issue as to be a sole reason for abolition but do accept that it is an arduous and unnecessary factor.
Supporters: You go with the notion that because somebody has shot up a crowd or abuses children then they must deserve to die because somebody like them doesn't deserve to live on this planet anymore. Although you might also accept that the mentally ill, which may or may not include [Children]-ophiles, should be rehabilitated rather than executed or imprisoned. Again, social conformity.
If you don't fit in to these categorizations, good job. You're probably not as foolish as you look.
So anyway, my stance on the matter is that if a prisoner poses a clear lethal danger to staff, other inmates and civilians and either cannot be rehabilitated, and is not mentally ill, or refuse to be and are incarcerated for an appropriately long time then they should be executed. Completely regardless of the crime committed. It eliminates the requirement for trials and retrials and years on the waiting list since only one factor need be considered and a single psychiatric evaluation and the person could be easily legally executed after trial.
How can abolitions argue against that? I don't know. How on Earth can they claim to be moral for sparing a person who poses a significant risk to the lives of people around them? Accept the fact that it IS moral to kill people in some circumstances.
Now, supporters of the aforementioned type make the totally ridiculous implication that it is appropriate to allow the fate of a person to rest solely in the hands of a handful of random citizens with potentially polar ideologies. It's ridiculous. There are people on death row who killed a single person by accident whilst violent multiple homicide psychopathic inmates are held for 2 or 3 decades and released. It requires a full jury to agree without a single exception for a person to be placed on death row but the system is inherently entirely flawed because of the massive disparity in personal morality contained in the content of the jury. And it is simply not a logical decision to allow such a dynamic system to have power over people's lives. |

People sometimes get this for doing something they never did.

@Finland
I took that into account which is why my system doesn't allow for personal bias like with the current one. |

Wow, you found a way to make yourself more special than everybody, huh?
>"You reject the fact that killing people can be beneficial to society because it either doesn't sound very nice to you, or you know somebody on death row, or simply because you've succumbed to social conformity like another one of The Herd."
Except I reject the death penalty for NONE of those reasons.
I reject the death penalty because (1) it makes terrible economic sense, costing significantly more than life in prison, (2) a large percentage, as high as six percent, of people on death row are innocent, and (3) it violates the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution.
>"How can abolitions argue against that? I don't know. How on Earth can they claim to be moral for sparing a person who poses a significant risk to the lives of people around them? Accept the fact that it IS moral to kill people in some circumstances."
I'm not just going to accept something because you tell me to, you have to prove your case, and you've failed to do so.
We have prisons for a reason and they have shown to be incredibly good at keeping dangerous people off the streets. When's the last time someone tried to kill you? Probably never.
So saying "WE NEED THE DEATH PENALTY TO KEEP BAD PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS" is just utter nonsense when we already have a system that does the same thing significantly cheaper, without killing innocent people, and without violating the Constitution.

Humans also have a huge psychological bias to rule in favor of prosecution, even if the evidence is swinging the other way. Not to mention that the FBI even recently came out and admitted that they have been forging DNA evidence to get people prosecuted, and many innocent people have ended up on death row because of it.

@Sally
>Wow, you found a way to make yourself more special than everybody, huh? -Nah, I just don't fit in the most common categories of them.
>I reject the death penalty because (1) it makes terrible economic sense, costing significantly more than life in prison, (2) a large percentage, as high as six percent, of people on death row are innocent, and (3) it violates the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution -I agree. So why don't you agree with my version? Did you even read it properly? And if you're so concerned about the 8th why don't you just appeal to shoot them in the head? Plus it's called an "Amendment" for a reason...
>So saying "WE NEED THE DEATH PENALTY TO KEEP BAD PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS" is just utter nonsense -Good thing I'm not saying that then right?
>Humans also have a huge psychological bias to rule in favor of prosecution, [etc] -Good thing my idea doesn't require a jury or any other evidence than a potentially anonymous psychological evaluation then.

I disagree. Life in prison is a much harsher sentence than death row.

(1) I am concerned about the Eighth Amendment because it's in the Constitution. (2) Yes, it's called an Amendment for a reason, and that reason is because it was added to the original Constitution. A good document can change, a bad document can never change. It holds true until a new Amendment invalidates it. (3) Shooting people is still a violation of the Eighth Amendment.
>"-Good thing I'm not saying that then right?"
That is clearly what you said. "So anyway, my stance on the matter is that if a prisoner poses a clear lethal danger to staff, other inmates and civilians and either cannot be rehabilitated, and is not mentally ill, or refuse to be and are incarcerated for an appropriately long time then they should be executed."

So basically you want to take our incredibly rigorous system we have now, that already has a 6% error, and change it to a system where we use a soft science and personal opinions from people to sentence people to death?
Yeah, you're INSANE. |
