Fallout 3:
Big epic battle in which you are useless because the giant meme spouting robot does all the work The boss battle is literally 2 soldiers and a guy with a nice jacket You're forced to go into a chamber and die, even if you have fawkes or charon, beings who aren't hurt by radiation. (Or you can send in lyons, but I forget she exists most of the time) Roll credits
Fallout 1: After rushing around on a timer to try and save your vault you're given a new task after you get the geck. Stop the mutants. So you don't complain, you go out alone again and do your duty, it's really hard but you do it because you want to save your family and friends inside the vault. You finally have done it, it's taken months but the master is dead and his mutants are scattered, you return home eager to finally rest. You travel back, visiting all the places you have been, seeing how your presence has changed them, shaped them for the future. You'll miss the outside world but you do long for home. You finally reach the cave where your vault is hidden, you walk inside and are greeted by the overseer at the door. He thanks you, he calls you a hero, he tells you everybody would be dead if you didn't do what you did.
Then he banishes you, he doesn't want the people of the vault to think the wasteland is a safe place, he doesn't want anybody to follow in your footsteps and leave and probably get themselves killed. He doesn't want to do this but he's forced to, to protect his people. You leave home again, you'll never see everybody you know again, they'll all think you were killed outside of the vault. Your sacrifice keeps them all alive.
You're lonely.
Roll credits.
Please play fallout 1, it's a really good game.

"You're lonely."
Buthey. You've still got the overseer's corpse out here after you shot him in the back. |

Canon ending is you let the overseer live.
Which in my opinion is a better ending, it shows the wasteland didn't change you.

| FO3 is a trash game that its story isn't any Complex than a lore-destroying crap About Good (CW BoS) vs Evil (Enclave). It has such an utterly Nonsensical Story I don't even count the Bethout series as canon. |

FO1's ending was pretty sad, but I can see where the overseer was coming from.
On a side note:Not 100% sure though, but didn't the overseer get executed or something for banishing you later in the timeline? |

I don't believe so.
The people of the vault were kidnapped by the enclave like 50 years later though.
