We ourselves are forum or text roleplayers, and many of us are also tabletop roleplayers. These two things are quite well-known and well-documented amongst our (highly dysfunctional) community.
Some of us have decided to go in-game and occasionally observe game-RPers in their natural habitat, teaching us more about these primitive peoples and their behaviours. We have studied them somewhat, but to say "extensively" would be much of an overstatement - regardless, we at least currently know something of their culture.
There is, however, one major group of RPer whom we outwardly hate without knowing much about them. As you may have inferred by the title, I am clearly referring to group-RPers.
From what little we do know about them, they can be divided into four sub-groups: The first group is that which primarily roleplays as animals, especially, for some reason, cats. To hell with them. The second group is those who roleplay entirely based off of a medium of entertainment, such as a book series or a TV show, usually Japanese anime. These people are slightly more bearable, but they are often annoying, especially the Japanese anime sub-sub-group. The third is "Ro-Nations", where they pick a country and pretend to be residents or citizens of said country. This one is probably the most unusual, unorthodox and undocumented species of group RPers I have ever seen or heard of. The fourth group of group RPers is really just one group - Thismonia. Thismonia has been documented in great detail and was, in fact, founded by one of our own.
I intend to infiltrate a group of this third sub-group of RPers and document and catalogue what I find. How do they RP? Do they use the language of their Ro-Nation, or do they simply use English? What timezone are they centred in? Why do they RP? And, perhaps the most important question of all, what is it about Ro-Nations that makes them so damned popular?
The reason I post this thread is somewhat simple. I seek recommendations as to the particular Ro-Nation (I'm thinking somewhere in Europe) and to see if any here are brave enough to join me in my deep-cover mission into Ro-Nationing. If you are unwilling to volunteer out of fear of what we may find, I am willing to accept that. If you are unwilling to volunteer because you really, really dislike me, I am willing to accept that. However, if you have even the slightest bit of curiosity, I kindly request that you reconsider your immediate "hell no" response and instead choose to volunteer to aid me in this pioneering research. |

| That's one volunteer to aid me in my quest. I'm thinking I'll use one of my alts, though, due to groupspace concerns and whatnot. |

1) Depending on how hardcore their standards are, they'll probably stick to English. 2) My guesses are either they come from the country the group is gimmicking itself on and their strong sense of nationalism compels them to join, or they're foreigners with a strong interest in the specific country's lifestyle, or they have really boring tastes in roleplays. 3) Hell if I know the answer to that.
I think it's pretty pointless to go undercover just to figure why ro-nationers do what they do, but I also think it'll be fun to see you find the answers to that yourself, especially for that last question. |

| Experiencing Ro-Nationing from the perspective of a Ro-Nationer is the only logical way to learn more about their culture, albeit I doubt I could figure out an easy way to learn about them objectively. |

| I've decided upon a start date for this mission - October 5th, 2015. We will spend the time until then selecting which group to join. |

In my personal opinion, one need not actual become a member of a Ro-Nation to understand. I am the sort of person who has jumped through literally every single one of those sub-genres you mentioned, and when you do that, you begin to get used to these things. Even war groups based off of real nations have some roleplay to them, like the discussions of alliances, or special RP events they hold. Honestly, I could add to the number of sub-genres, because some appear to be missing such as the Domination and Minibuilders, who build countries or colonies on planets, bases, ect, and roleplay the actions of characters displayed on tiles and bricks. You know what really boggles me, though? The hatred and discrimination. Textile roleplayers complain about place roleplayers, and a little less vice versa, and the same for all kinds of roleplay, groups, subjects, eras, nations... Even the forums themselves are full of people who look down on one another. But from my experience, I can say that no forum is in itself BAD, there are just lots of good, BAD, and neutral people all throughout. (Sorry, I ramble a bit~!)

| Also, sorry for the double post, but I have to reply to the person who said "Roleplaying is no longer for roleplayers." Seriously? Place roleplaying, domination, war clan rping, it ALL involves the use of text to spur one's imagination. Some have more visual things than others, like a group of DnD players who act out their fights instead of narrating them, and so on, but it IS all roleplaying, and any good roleplayers within these groups use text, and plenty of it. It is ALL roleplaying. I'mDoneKthanksBye! |

@Insurgencies Thismonia is a medieval-fantasy wargroup with lore and a roleplaying factor, if I am not mistaken, also like the kingdom of Halmar, and the empires of Mandoria and Jardia. |

| @Duncan1000, this is an OOC thread. Leave it alone, if you would be so kind. I would also like to note that the text versus place argument has been argued by both sides back and forth, and I do not recall anything in the rules that specifies this is for text only, and not OOC or character sheets or things from RP GROUPS. |

| Have you read the description of this sub-forum? And I don't care if this is an OOC thread we have too many - run off to off-topic if you wish to speak OOC. |

| Duncan, this is a research project of great importance to the very concept of what it means to roleplay. |
