I'm a Linux guy, but I'll say a few things about these OSes
"Windows 8" Terrible. Horrendous. They tried to implement flat-design, but threw out some pile of garbage that looked highly disproportional and totally off-putting in every single way possible.
"Windows ME" I don't see why it was so much of an issue. It was targeted for the home user, not enthusiasts. If you wanted an enthusiast-grade Windows OS at the time, Windows 2000 was your #1 choice. Everyone knew that Windows 9x-based OSes weren't worth your time if you did more than generic home-computer activities. It doesn't even crash as much as people say it does, and it incorporates some of the good features that Windows 2000 offers.
"Windows Vista" Not bad at all. One of the best OSes by Windows, as long as you get a later service pack. The version of Windows Vista that gave the whole OS a bad reputation was Windows Vista RTM and the very early service packs. They had horrible performance (considering the low-end machines still being used at the time) and hardware-support was next to none, but this was all fixed and patched up in the long-run.
