in terms of harmonic complexity/innovation of theory
that album is poop lol, not too much gold on that album,
you people see, the real troubling thing to do is to bridge jazz-level complexity with meandering keys/shifting modes/unorthodox chordal changes and make it beautiful and popular with the people |

also the chordal semantic shifts in pet sounds is literally unrivaled
god only knows is literally the best example i can think of where an unstable chordal sequence can bridge with the lyrics uncertainty and the unstableness of the chords resolves with the lyrics themselves, whether or not tony asher meant to do that, i dont know but i honestly think it was luck and a bit of magic that created it |

i would compare brian wilson when he was actually let free and in his prime to a classical composer who makes use of very complex diatonic/non-diatonic harmony (e.g. gershwin, bach) and that album to be just a rock album lol |
