My first one of these since 8/10/2015. I will, when school starts up on the 8th, do one every Sunday.
One of the only problem the Indian team has right now is who would be optimal in the middle order. Cheteshwar Pujara or Rohit Sharma?
With Pujara in the side, it appears that it is optimal for him to bat at No. 3. With Rohit, he is optimal to bat at No. 5.
However, India have a settled No. 5 in Ajinkya Rahane. In their recent tour of Sri Lanka, they promoted Rahane up to No. 3 and played Rohit at 5.
WITH ROHIT: No 1. Murali Vijay No 2. KL Rahul/Shikhar Dhawan No 3. Ajinkya Rahane No 4. Virat Kohli(c) No 5. Rohit Sharma No 6. Stuart Binny No 7. Naman Ojha/Wriddiman Saha(wk) No 8. Amit Mishra No 9. Ravichandran Ashwin No 10. Ishant Sharma/Bhuvneshwar Kumar No 11. Umesh Yadav/Varun Aaron
WITH PUJARA: No 1. Murali Vijay No 2. KL Rahul/Shikhar Dhawan No 3. Cheteshwar Pujara No 4. Virat Kohli(c) No 5. Ajinkya Rahane No 6. Stuart Binny No 7. Naman Ojha/Wriddiman Saha(wk) No 8. Amit Mishra No 9. Ravichandran Ashwin No 10. Ishant Sharma/Bhuvneshwar Kumar No 11. Umesh Yadav/Varun Aaron
First of all, we need to establish what Rahane's record at No. 3 is, to see whether the Rohit move will come off.
AT 3 AVG: 35.50 INNINGS: 4 HUNDREDS: 1
AT 5 AVG: 40.20 INNINGS: 22 HUNDREDS: 2
While they don't seem to deviate much, Rahane has batted at No. 5 much more, making his No. 5 average much more impressive. Possibly, if Rahane bats at 5, at it's Rohit v Pujara @ 3, then let's see Rohit's record.
AT 3 AVG: 26.75 INNINGS: 4 HUNDREDS: 0
AT 5 AVG: 35.60 INNINGS: 11 HUNDREDS: 0
They are both not impressive numbers. However, if he still shows that he can be better than Pujara, then let's compare Pujara's record at No. 3.
AVG: 49.03 INNINGS: 39 HUNDREDS: 6
An average of nearly 50-- a 50+ average is a sign of a all-time great. Considering he has played 39 innings, that's even more impressive. The Pujara v Rohit debate clearly only has one solution at No. 3-- Pujara.
But what about Rohit v Rahane at 5? Clearly, Rahane also shows his class and deserves No 5. In this scenario, Rohit sh
However, is there a possible way to fit Rohit into the 11?
ROHIT AT NO. 6
AVG: 50.37 INNINGS: 9 HUNDREDS: 2
However, Virat Kohli, the captain has said that he wants a 5-4-1-1 set-up. Five batsmen, four bowlers, one allrounder and one keeper.
The top five batsmen in the Indian side are Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane. The allrounder is Stuart Binny. The keeper is one of Naman Ojha or Wriddiman Saha. The four bowlers can be juggled around, and the only sealed spots in Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra.
Kohli will have to do away with this theory if he wants to play Rohit, which mainly means that Stuart Binny would have to lose out. But is Vijay + Rohit's part time offspin enough to make up the allrounder? Batting is improved, but does it compromise bowling?
Ultimately, the only way Kohli can play Rohit, is if he does away with the 5-4-1-1.
What do you think?
