Arrowhead: A formation in which the flagship, or the largest ship, is slightly ahead of the other ships. The second and third ships are slightly behind it on its right and left side. The fourth and fifth ships are slightly behind the second and third ships to the left or right. This forms the shape of an arrowhead. This is primarily an offensive formation used to attack hostile ships.

The fourth and fifth ships are slightly behind the second and third ships to the left or right. The sixth and/or seventh ships are lined up behind the flagship. This will resemble a tail. Altogether, it will look like a spearhead. This is primarily an offensive formation used to attack hostile ships.
Wall: A formation in which all ships are in a line. Each ship’s bow should be facing the same direction and its broadsides at the same angle to minimize friendly fire. This is primarily a defensive formation used to defend an area against hostile ships. This formation can also be used as a line formation to sail long distances in friendly waters.
Line: A formation in which all ships follow the flagship. They do so in a single file line. This is sometimes called column.
Box: A formation in which there is a ship at the front of the formation, and two ships directly behind it. The middle ship of the three ships in a straight line has a ship to its right and left that are even with it. This forms a shape that looks like a box.
