focus on emotion

like have a legitimate character arc, even if shortened into 5-8 minutes. Don't just make another film about depression, suicide, drugs, or alcoholism

that's another thing, why so much negativity in student films!

I'm starting film class next year, and I've been a fan of movies and films for many years. (Not just watching, but how they work, the thought that goes into them, etc.)

I recently started to look for student films online. I have yet to find more than 2-3 that actually fit my standards for non generic. Those being one about this alien being tortured (10/10, watched the whole thing), this firefly music video made by 7th graders, and one other I can't remember.

What do they seem to teach that makes everyone think negatively?

school usually asks you to talk about "real life" which usually focuses more on the negative aspect of things.

I've seen student films about LSD hippies and that was actually a pretty good movie to watch while stoned

that reminds me I gotta watch that movie again

brb

Why do they ask you to focus on real life? Isn't the 'magic of film' supposed to bring fantasy to life?

depends on the type of film, you'll most likely learn about that in school too.

there are fantasy movies and more popular movies like f&f which will obviously focus on the "fantasy" aspect of life or even full-on fantasy like star wars.

but alot of movies like dramas and such focus on the dark side of life, which tbh when you grow up you'll start to realize is the more realistic one.

good luck with your school too, bruh.

I've always just found the light side of film to be more interesting to me. And I don't mean cherry's and sprinkles stuff, but I just think too many people think that edgy = drama

I always like to think the best way to create drama is to somehow make the audience want to be the character, not feel weird/have their stomauch churned watching it (I'm looking at you depression and cutting films!)

some people enjoy looking at movies that are more realistic and speak about real life than to watch "lighter" movies, it's all personal preference.

I watch all type of movies personally except for "police" movies, god I hate them, unless it's a comedy, or a really good one.

I love worlds that immerse you, like scifi and some fantasy (but not medieval fantasy)

For example, if I ever got the opportunity, I would make a ready player one/sword art online style film any time

also the online police shows I've ever gotten in to are:
-Hannibal (god that's good, but I like that the main character has aspergers like me)
-Continuum

it's simply easy for some people to find immersion in more realistic movies though, for example, I feel really immersed when I watch movies like Juice, starring Tupac, because that's just very simillar to the situation a lot of people, me included live in now-a-days.

and you should check out Juice btw, you'll understand what I'm talking about, and you'll enjoy it if you enjoy a good, classic film.

You sound like you've been in film class before, since you know what they teach.

Do they require you to use real life inclusion? I think that ruins opportunity as a director

Huh, okay.

I'm just interested is all. I am really excited for the class, and I've done some small (not so great) editing in the past.

I have some people in my family that have their career in film, most notably one of my cousins who is the stunt and effects director on Blacklist
