Via Maris - Way of the Sea
Theme - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db1rzdeMpQE
____________________________________________________________________________________ Synopsis
Based in an archipelago within the Atlantic ocean during post-apocalyptic times, survivors within the Deus archipelago use sailboats as their way of transportation. Called Swabs, these sailors loot on stormy seas while investigating and reaping the benefits of each island, however many hold dark secrets that will ensnare any who dares come within their vicinity. With that being said, you’d best watch your step, for the life of a Swab is one that always ends short.
No exceptions. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Introduction
Way of the sea, way of the sea. If you are to follow it, it rewards you. You deny it, it destroys you, especially during these days when time has reverted back to ages before anyone can recall. That knowledge doesn’t have any sort of weight nor relevance on the Deus archipelago anymore. What matters is if you know how to tie half-hitches and whether or not you raise a sail in tumultuous weather while massive raindrops and hail the size of golfballs descend upon you. Because without the knowledge of how to prepare and maintain a sailboat, the dark seas of the Atlantic will chew you up and spit you into the unknown that waits below in a heartbeat.
But why have we reverted back to sailboats instead of gas-guzzling, engine powered ships? Because humanity fell. Why has it fallen though, you may question? The only answer that is to be given is the same one that would be received if you were to ask about where higher education is not common knowledge anymore; the information has been lost because it is inadmissible. All that matters to these people is survival, and many have different… unorthodox methods when it comes getting their day’s meal.
You’ll learn about what lies on these islands soon enough, but there is common knowledge of what lies in the thick forests and on the unwelcoming beaches. Fair winds, Swab.
____________________________________________________________________________________ Significant Islands
Map - ht tp://oi62.tiny pic.com/21cchza. jpg
Wolf’s Point -
Wolf’s Points is one of the few islands that still has a partly-working society within it. Lying inside the natural coves lie two “harbor” shanty towns. One, inside the smaller cove, is named Traver’s Rock. Traver’s Rock is an area of trade and is named after the large rock that juts out of the water, just half a kilometer out from the unstable docks. The second harbor, named Red Waters for the algae that grows in the lagoon, is also an area of active trade. There are a few shanties which are able to rented out to catch a good night’s rest, but one should still be wary when resting in any of Wolf Point’s harbors.
Albatross Island - There’s only one know harbor on this - Pyre’s Ribs, which is represented by the two spits that jut out into the sea. The harbor lies in between the two. Be aware when stopping here, because the inhabitants are always looking for quick coin, and outsiders are their main targets when they are seeking it. What lies on the island is unknown beyond the single harbor.
Serpent’s Tail -
Serpent’s Tail is one of the islands that represents what humanity once was. It’s plains-like territory leaves it open and vast, perfect for settling which is what some folks did before humanity’s fall. Now, there lies a heap of ruined buildings which were most-likely used for housing. On the other side lies what seems to be an old factory of sorts and the name of the factory on the billboard is almost legible. However, the Swabs call it Děs because of its haunting appearance. Few know what lies inside the husk of-a-building, but the daring may just find a fortune. If they manage to resurface, that is.
Faihaim Island -
The most unstable place in the entire archipelago, Faihaim Island is living hell for those who already used to live in living hell. The reason for this being how everyone living there has to fight for their life. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, although here it takes a rather more sinister connotation. Why? Everyone living here has been exiled from any island in the entire archipelago, especially from Albatross. This wouldn’t be such a problem if it weren’t for the fact that everyone in the archipelago hates each other and has been reduced to one of the smallest inhabited islands in the archipelago, added to a serious lack of resources.
Sutton -
Sutton is the home of dense forests and mountains the further inland you go. While the island isn’t the largest in the archipelago, it is home of the fiercest rivalry which is fought between the Oracles and the group known as Farwich Crest. Each have made their homes on the opposite ends of the islands, staying as far away from one another as possible. However, the groups still manage to run into one another and it never ends well. The two groups have duked it out this way for years and it seems that there’s no change about to come.
Cleaver’s Tip -
It’s sinister naming is no coincidence. The isle is home of the pirates who are known to ransack and raid anyone and any town they come across. They strike quickly, loot quickly, and sail quickly out into the seas. Be wary when nearing Cleaver’s Tip, because it will cut you down in a flash, the same way the isle’s uncanny name will.
Isles of Ivory -
The Isles of Ivory are probably one of the most pleasantly named islands in the archipelago, however it is still one of the most dangerous. Named for it’s white, welcoming shores, the isle holds dark secrets within. Rumors spread throughout Cleaver’s Tip all the way to Red Waters about a dark presence that lurks within the forests of the isles. Something more sinister… something more disturbing than even that of the Isle of Bonfires.
Isle of Bonfires -
The Isle of Bonfires gets its name from the massive celebrations from the locals, which, obviously, include many large bonfires of different shapes and sizes. It should be a fun-looking group of people, but you’d be wrong to assume that. You see, there’s a real shortage of any sort of meat except for fish, which is also beginning to become scarce. This has driven the settlers of this place to find “alternative” sources for meat. You see, there’s a reason why they’re the only island to keep their prisoners instead of exiling them to Faihaim. They’re never heard from again, but according to locals, they’re a delicacy, if you catch their drift. Bonfires always had a particular smell some Swabs described as “human”, but, it’s never been proven, obviously. Others say it’s rituals, unconfirmed as well.
Hunter -
Hunter is a relatively small island, neatly placed between two rather conflictive and intimidating islands, Sutton and Bonfires. But despite this, they’re the largest economic zone where there even seems to be peace between most of the archipelago island’s traders. This would make it the opposite of Faihaim. However, life’s not perfect, as there’s a growing trend of raids on the harbor, severely affecting traders from as far as Serpent’s Tail. Added to the casual kidnappings by Bonfire Swabs because of the proximity, life can be a coin-flip in here.
Elm -
Elm is another island with a forgotten past. Particularly low-lying, Elm only reaches 52 feet above sea level at its highest. The island is relatively rocky, leaving little room for vegetation to grow. When it does, it grows at abundantly. The main feature of this relatively small isle is a woman of older age who lives in the abandoned, pre-fall of humanity town. She’s the only one who lives there, however the houses are usually filled with patients who she cares for without charge. She’s the most skilled healer in the entire archipelago, and never turns away one who is injured, which is why her small town is never vacant.
___________________________________________________________________________________ Terms, Rules, and and the CS -
(Terms)
Swabs - The sailors of the Deus Archipelago. No matter your motives or morals, you’re defined as a Swab so long as you sail. They are usually independent, working with only a small crew instead of creating a faction, but there are exceptions. (You are one of them yourself.)
Skin Crawlers - Those who see the dead as more than just dead. They see it as an opportunity for a quick meal.
Dinar - The currency used by all of the islands in Deus Archipelago. Copper coins are worth very little, iron coins are worth more, bronze coins are worth a good price, and gold coins are worth the most. If you manage to pocket even one of these gold coins, you’d best not show it lest you wind up missing…
Phalanges - The smallest of the sailboats. They have a rudder, a single sail and are only able to hold a single person along with a small amount of cargo.
Vertebrae - The average sailboats which can hold up to four people, however they most commonly only hold two. One who mains the sail and another who mans the wheel. These ships are sleek and fast, and are the ones you will most commonly see. You’ll see many variations to the builds of these boats, too.
Femur - Most likely the largest sailboat you’ll see. They’re rare, and they can hold around ten people with a sizeable amount of cargo, too. They’re sturdy, hardy, and can handle a storm any day.
The Turdina - A sizably larger sailboat than the Femur. While the Femur’s a sight you’ll remember, a Turdina might end up being the last thing you ever see. It’s rumored to be a pirate ship from an arrangement of hardened Faihaim escapees, armed to the teeth and ready to shoot anyone on sight. However, just like Bonfire diet, it’s never been proven.
(Rules)
1. Deshoras and myself are the creators of this roleplay therefore we have the power to make decisions about what you can and can’t do. While we want to you explore the islands and talk about discovering their histories, we ask that you stick to the post-apocalyptic setting we have described, while still making the lore behind each island realistic and tangible. If you think you idea may not fit the albeit broad standards, ask first.
2. Generic roleplay rules apply (No Mary-Sues, Powerplaying, Metagaming, Spotlighting, etc.)
3. Your character is a Swab and Swabs have a special relationship with their sailboats. I recommend you spend a good amount of time describing your sailboat. Decorate it with grim paints and things of that sort.
4. Guns are allowed, however they must be broad and, again, obtainable (rifles and pistols only.) Examples - “A low-caliber, semi-automatic handgun,” or “A high-caliber, bolt-action rifle.”
5. Start with someone. This isn’t necessary, but I highly recommend it. With such a large map, there is a slim chance of you meeting up with someone, so talk with the other joiners or leave the “Companions,” slot designated as “Open.”
6.Literacy, please! No one-liner posts or excessively poor grammar. Be descriptive with each post, three lines or more being minimal unless there is literally nothing to talk about.
7. Combat is determined solely by the roleplayer. You may present events for yourself, like a pirate attacking your sailboat on the seas and determine the outcome of the event yourself. In other words, there are no dice rolls, so combat is determined by the roleplayer. If it comes to roleplayers having a brawl, this rule is subject to change.
8. If anything is unclear, don't be afraid to ask!

It is a bit of a word-wall, but you can just skim the islands which takes up the majority of it.
As for scale, the map is six kilometers when going from East to West and it is about three kilometers when going from North to South.
And yes, it isn't meant to be massive. |

Name: Solomon Wheaton Group: None. Alias: Wheats Age: 27 Gender: Male Crew: Deshoras’ character (Will take on another character if needed.) Physical Appearance: Solomon takes on a broad build, with wide shoulders and an overall well-toned upper body, due to his constant upkeep of the Kataigda and other work he does on the side. His skin is of a bronze tint, his hair is black, long, and kept in a ponytail, and his eyes are a dark brown, which possibly hints on some sort of native heritage possibly. His eyebrows are thick and profound, dark circles lie underneath his eyes, and the skin on his hands are thick with calluses along with being leathery in texture. His facial features are simple. His nose is relatively small, his lips are a pale red, and his facial features are angular and profound, like his bushy eyebrows. He comes in at 6 feet flat even and weighs 164 pounds. Clothing: Solomon’s sailing attire is realitvely simple. He wears a pair of brown, leather moccasins, khaki-colored pants with leather overalls that stretch over his shoulders. He wears a simple white button-up shirt which is hardly white anymore. When on land, he wears a blue overcoat atop the button-up. It too has faded in color, but it doesn’t matter much anymore. Biography: TBD Other: Solomon carries along with him a small-calibre, semi-automatic handgun along with a dagger that sets in a shoulder harness. He also carries a multi-tool, which also rests in an extra pocket on the leather shoulder harness.
Sailboat -
Name: The Kataigda Type - Vertebrae Description - The Kataigda takes on an averagely-shaped hull which is made of sturdy, black walnut wood that has been made stable using tar and other sticky substances that would help bind the wood together well. The masts are made of white oak. One, which is larger in girth and height, holds the largest sail which has been upkept well, however a few holes can be seen in the sails. Decor - The Kataigda’s sails are a crimson red while its hull is a monochrome black. Its sails are painted in this night-black tint as well. Other - N/A |

CS -
Name: Wallace Danes Group: None Alias: Viking Age: 29 Gender: Male Crew: A man named Christoph Loraine Physical Appearance: Medium height, but with arms thick as planks and hands with more calluses than actual skin. Pale skinned and with a fury red full beard and equally reddish curly hair. Most of his other features are plain, uninteresting, except for a large chunk of his left ear missing. Clothing: A old gray sweater that has been patched at various times and equally patched trousers with black boots. Sure, he has other clothing, but then it means he lost his normal outfit. Biography: TBD Other: Wallace is armed with a dual pair of hatchet, and a couple throwing knives. He never got the training or patience to train with firearms, so he is without it.
Sailboat CS - Name: 'Loki' Type - Vertebre Description - 'Loki' is very much designed like a longship, made of brown oak planks, with a single large mast made of pine. Though slower than most other Vertebre, it can hold itself against weather and attack better. It is extremely well kept, almost as if a treasure by it's two man crew. Decor - A figurehead carved into the head of dragon, very much like that of the long ships. A solid pair of black axes cross on the white gray sails. Other - N/A |

@TNTJack
(Accepted, however I want you to make a CS for Christopher, too. The whole crew slot there is meant to be taken up by another roleplayer to keep the roleplaying from getting dull. However, if you want, controlling your crew is perfectly acceptable so long as you make Christopher's CS.) |

So, is it nuclear-bombed-back-in-time legit Sailing Ships?
Or more like Rusty Rowboats with quilts for sails? |

They're actual sailboats Pirate, however they should have some age to them which can easily be represented in the description you provide for your ship.
Also, what happened before is unknown, as was stated in the introduction.
And OTNews, most of it's just the locations which can be skimmed, but whatever floats your boat, no pun intended. |

Well, I just meant that some post-apocalypse settings set Humanity back quite a while in terms of technology, so I wasn't sure if we were building actual ships or just jury-rigging the things.
I guess it's the former.
Either way, preparing a CS |

@Pick
The Phalanges class of sailboats are small, one-person boats fit for the lone wolf, so that might be your best option. The other classes of ships can be found under the "Terms," section. Also, do keep in might that the classes of the ships are meant to be very broad. As you can see, TNTJack went for a Viking-esque, longship while my character's sailboat much different in style since it's built for speed. |

(Longships crossed the Atlantic, and plundered the riverlands of Europe. Lets just say that gives them a certain 'capability'.) (And firespark, I can house another soul! After all, Vertebrae can house up to four!) CS -
Name: Christoph Loraine Group: None Alias: Righter Age: 21 Gender: Male(?) Crew: Serves under Wallace Danes Physical Appearance: Tall but thin and with little muscle to use, Christoph makes up for it with speed. A shaggy brown haired and olive-skinned young man with a scar right across the bridge of his nose and inviting blue eyes, it is a wonder how he got himself involved with the 'Viking'. Clothing: Unlike Wallace, Christoph wears whatever he finds comfortable for the day. Cold? Somehow he will find a long shirt from somewhere on the ship. But most likely, he is in a rolled up and stained white longsleeve shirt, with tan cargo shorts. And always a grey knit hat. Biography: Not available. Other: Christoph uses a revolver pistol and a knife, both in his right hand. Hence the name 'Righter' |

| (Personally I'd rather you go more in-depth on Anthony's physique and attire to truly bring his character to life, but you can leave it brief if you really want to. Also, you can have a flintlock I guess, but you are allowed to use modern firearms, so long as you keep it broad, but that's only if you want to change it. Check the rules if you're unsure about the weapons. If you want to leave it at that though, Anthony is accepted.) |
