I'll be using it mainly for music and schoolwork. The main programs I plan to be running: - Google Chrome - Microsoft Office (duh) - Pro Tools (DAW program) - Garageband (should come with it already installed) - Adobe Photoshop CS6 - League of Legends
What's the best MacBook to make all of that work smoothly but without costing a fortune?

Kids don't know how to read.
No matter how hard you try to convince me, I'm getting a MacBook. That's the industry standard for music production, so it's what I need. HP/Windows can't run ProTools, Ableton, Garageband, and other important DAWs. There are no important DAWs that are exclusive to HP/Windows. Plus, I have an iPhone, so the compatibility there will be immensely useful.

@pieb That's kind of the least important program on this list. Gaming takes a back seat to work.

Seriously. Hundreds of tech geeks and zero opinions on which MacBook to get. I don't care if you prefer HP/Windows, you still probably know what kind of stats I need and what everything means. God knows I don't.

So i've owned the Macbook air since 2012
Best macbook imo
It's better than the Macbook with CD drive , since it's lighter, better screen, thinner, better battery , ssd instead of hard drive so it's much faster, more modern
It's better than the Retina, cheaper, longer battery life, similar performance
It's better than the Macbook (the one that comes in 3 colors) , better performance, better battery alot more ports
Macbook air 13 is like the go to laptop, it has all the features, while being modern and fast with great battery life for school |

It has all the ports you want
Headphone, two usb 3/2 ports (plenty one for a mouse and one for other), a thunderbolt port that DOUBLES as a screen adapter for projectors, monitors etc a SD card slot (aviable on 13 which i got) |

@Commander OK two questions: 1. What exactly is retina? 2. Does the air have a CD port? Because the ability to burn CDs may be important, though I'm not sure yet.

@bella Macs do everything I need them to, I'm not a computer wiz who has to build everything and edit everything. I'm a music kid. Macs are infinitely more suited for music making purposes. And if I can buy a CD port for the air then I should be set right?

| I am a HUGE windows guy, but the best way to produce music is with apple products unfortunately. |

Hi, I have used the same macbook for 4 years now
its a macbook pro 15 inch
it runs really well, I used it for school, music, videos, and roblox/studio
my suggestion is getting the pro 15 inch, but get additional memory installed
my model has two empty slots for memory, so i bought some and installedd it with a screwdriver
it has plenty of memory to keep my music, apps, and roblox files
i learned how to build and script on it, and its great never got a virus, but i did have my graphics card burn out on me once due to me playing too many games haha

"You're a "wannabe" music kid, set your own damn standard for the industry." You have to set the standard with the music, not the program. Why should I care if I have to use a Mac or a Windows, as long as I can use the program and push music out?
@thea Well I was leaning towards the Air. Can you provide an argument that would prove the Pro is better than the air? Keeping in mind the Air is also cheaper.

The Air does not have as much memory, smaller screen
And most backpacks can fit the macbook pro, so size is irrelevant
the air is also slower, something you do not want when playing games or making music |

Pro > Air
Air is mainly for studying, and the transportation related to that.
Pro is better at handling games, and more requiring programs.
But if you only plan on using it for schoolwork, like I do with my Air, just get an Air. |

NEITHER OF THE COMPUTERS ARE BETTER THAN THE OTHER
AS CAN BE SAID FOR ALL COMPUTERS
IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU PLAN ON USING IT FOR |
