I am the parent of a very keen player of Roblox but find myself having to limit his access to this site because of the incredible cost of letting him play this game! In a 3 day period last week Roblox cost us over 1 gigabyte of our broadband allocation! Surely this is outrageous!
When we investigated this game site and its benefits for our son we decided it was worth the investment and so we joined him up for the Builders Club. However, any educational benefit or fun that he could be having will have to be confined to very limited access because we are simply not prepared to pay the cost of so much of our broadband being eaten up by connecting to Roblox.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?
Regards
Concerned parent

Yeah this happens to me but i play roblox all day so i use alot but when you ask other people they say it hardly uses anything but i think i know what uses it its the maps that they play on they download everytime you open one i don't reall even playgames anymore i have just been practicing scripting and building maybe limiting your child to 2 hours a day I did a test for 15 mins to see how much it used it uses over 25mb in 15mins so thats estimated 100mb per hour but it depends where you live

Thanks for your comments - I was beginning to think we were doing something wrong! My limited knowledge of internet games just leaves me wondering how on earth a games site could justify such a cost to its players. We live in Sydney and I know Roblox is based in California but can that really have anything to do with it?

Maybe, but Roblox does have one of the best physics(i think thats it, not graphics) engines in the world, So it does take alot depends on where you go in games or through out the website. All is different.

Do remember: the physics and graphics engines are client-based, they do not run over the server.
Therefore, the broadband being used is from playing, uploading, and downloading items, not from anything to do with the client you download.
The client that is downloaded uses very little bandwidth when you download or update it.
I myself use a 12 MB per second connection, though playing ROBLOX it uses as little as 128 KB per second.
One GB per hour, really, isn't that much considering how much bandwidth is wasted by games such as Evony.
ROBLOX servers actually use very little bandwidth to actually run the game, your computer's hardware is what allows you to play, and what limits the usage.
One deciding factor in how much bandwidth ROBLOX uses is meshes and sounds.
Inserting ROBLOX approved sounds and meshes takes only processor and graphical memory.
Inserting player-created meshes and sounds, that have not been approved, causes a strain on your bandwidth, as those items must be downloaded in their entirety, allowing you to use them or play them as if they were a sound or mesh directly added on your hard-drive.
Now, looking at this post, I wonder why I failed English...

I can assure everyone that roblox plays no cost at any HUGE bandwidth cost because it's the equivalent of watching an HD video on youtube in both memory and bandwidth

Have you got broadband internet?
If you do, perhaps you ought to look at getting an unlimited internet package.
If you are on dialup, it may be a better option to look at letting your child use a computer at their local library, however you would have to get permission to download roblox first.

Here's a few steps to turn down the usage.

1) Open Roblox Studio

2) Open the Tools Menu, and select "Settings" from the drop-down menu. A message box will appear that says "Changing settings may make ROBLOX unstable. Click 'Ok'

3) Find the "Network" tab on the left-hand side of the settings window.

4) There should be 5 classes (in bold; Data, Network, Physics, Networking, and Diagnostics. You can click the minus sign to collapse all of those except Network.)

5) The first property in Network should be "DataSendRate." Mine is set to 50, but if you turn it down some, that should slow down how fast it pings the server.

6) Do the same thing to the RecieveRate, and PhysicsSendRate properties in the Network class

I have had 4 months of more than 25 Gig downloaded per month with our ISP .I turned off my WiFi thinking perhaps someone was piggybacking our service and downloading movies or something but even after turning off the WiFi the kids have still racked up this amount of data. They also play PlayStation , does it download data other than game updates?

roblox only wants to use 20mb/s on places with +- 5 to 10 people , so i think the problem is mainly what places you visit
