The current genre system is fine and all, but I think a more comprehensive system would be better for a new generation of game developers. The old system was created back before the capabilities of the ROBLOX engine became this advanced. I think it's time to replace the old system, which more closely resembles writing genres than video game ones.
In this new system, game developers would be able to assign a genre, relating to how the game plays, and a theme, relating to what the game is about.
Most descriptions provided by wikipedia.
Genres:
Fighting Fighting games emphasize one-on-one combat between two characters, one of which may be computer controlled. These games are usually played by linking together long chains of button presses on the controller to use physical attacks to fight.
MOBA Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), also known as action real-time strategy (ARTS), is a subgenre of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre of video games, in which often two teams of players compete with each other in discrete games, with each player controlling a single character through an RTS-style interface.
FPS First-person shooter video games, commonly known as FPSs, emphasize shooting and combat from the perspective of the character controlled by the player. This perspective is meant to give the player the feeling of "being there", and allows the player to focus on aiming.
TPS Third-person shooter video games, known as TPSs or 3PSs, emphasize shooting and combat from a camera perspective in which the player character is seen at a distance.
Adventure Adventure describes a manner of gameplay without reflex challenges or action. They normally require the player to solve various puzzles by interacting with people or the environment, most often in a non-confrontational way.
RPG Role-playing video games draw their gameplay from traditional role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. Most of these games cast the player in the role of one or more "adventurers" who specialize in specific skill sets (such as melee combat or casting magic spells) while progressing through a predetermined storyline. Many involve manoeuvring these character(s) through an overworld, usually populated with monsters, that allows access to more important game locations, such as towns, dungeons, and castles.
Simulation Simulation video games is a diverse super-category of games, generally designed to closely simulate aspects of a real or fictional reality. [Games like ROBLOX High School would fall under this category and not RPG. Tycoons fall under this.]
RTS The moniker "real-time strategy" indicates that the action in the game is continuous, and players will have to make their decisions and actions within the backdrop of a constantly changing game state. Real-time strategy gameplay is characterised by obtaining resources, building bases, researching technologies and producing units.
Sports Sports are games that play competitively one team, containing or controlled by you, and another team that opposes you. This opposing team(s) can be controlled by other real life people or artificial intelligence.
Obby For obbies.
Other Games that do not fall into any of the above categories.
Themes:
Sci-Fi Western Town and City Sandbox Horror Military Pirate Comedy
More genres or themes could be added than the ones I specifically mentioned, and some could be removed if this feature is implemented.

Support, only problem is that it wouldn't really change the front page.

"Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Check the references."
Everything there is accurate. I know the definitions of all of these, I'm just not that great at putting them into words.

It doesn't have to change the front page. The purpose of this would be to make it easier to find games you want to play.

-There aren't many MOBAs in ROBLOX, so those could fit under "Fighting" or "RTS" -FPS and TPS could just be combined into "Shooter" -RPG could fit under "Adventure" -If you say we need an obby genre, then we also need a separate genre for "Murder" and "Tycoon" -An "Arcade" genre could be nice when enough games are made for it. -"Sandbox" should be a genre, not a theme.
Support otherwise. |

-There aren't many MOBAs in ROBLOX, so those could fit under "Fighting" or "RTS" >Yeah probably a good point -FPS and TPS could just be combined into "Shooter" >I guess -RPG could fit under "Adventure" >Not really. RPG refers to combat whereas adventure refers to puzzles. -If you say we need an obby genre, then we also need a separate genre for "Murder" and "Tycoon" >Murder can fall into the category of RTS or Fighting. Tycoon would be simulation. Obby doesn't really fit anywhere else. -An "Arcade" genre could be nice when enough games are made for it. >Arcade isn't really a genre as much as it is a design choice. -"Sandbox" should be a genre, not a theme. >Probably.

>Not really. RPG refers to combat whereas adventure refers to puzzles. -Not all adventure games refer to puzzles. Heck, make a "Puzzle & Skill" genre for those games.
>Arcade isn't really a genre as much as it is a design choice. -Make it a theme then.
...And maybe replace Fighting with Action. |

There is a big difference between adventure and RPG. I'm not quite sure how to effectively explain it, but it's there.
Look at World of Warcraft and Tomb Raider. Big differences, because one's an RPG and one's Adventure.

Support, but 1 thing: if you want to use actual video game genres you should rename "obby" to "platformer" |

"if you want to use actual video game genres you should rename "obby" to "platformer"" I'm not interested in using actual genres as much as ones that describe the game. "Platformer" generally implies 2D and platform based. Not all obbies are like this. I thought about it, but decided not to because of these differences.

"Platformer" actually can be 3D. Look at games like Super Mario 3D Land. They have the aspects of a 2D platformer, just put it on a 3D plane. And yes, not all obbies are like that, but why not put those "not all" obbies in "Adventure?" |

I guess.
My point here wasn't to use the exact genres and themes I listed, it was just to suggest a complete rebirth for the genre system.
