@cour
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_in_Australia
"Football in Australia refers to football codes played in the country including Australian rules football, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, American football and Gaelic football. Professional football is played in Australia for four of these codes, with the leagues involved including the Australian Football League, the National Rugby League, Super Rugby and the A-League. "

@cour: I think they call it soccer in Australia though because of Australian rules football and rugby league/union.

according to wikipedia (WHICH IS ALWAYS RIGHT)
"National football teams include the Australia national soccer team ("Socceroos") who compete in FIFA World Cup / AFC Asian Cup / Olympic Football qualification and finals tournaments, the Australia national rugby union team ("Wallabies") who compete in The Rugby Championship and the World Cup while the Australian rugby league team ("Kangaroos") compete in various Ashes, ANZAC, Four Nations and World Cup rugby league test matches. The Australia international rules football team is composed of players from the Australian Football League and compete against the best Gaelic football players from Ireland in a hybrid International Rules Series." |

australian here.
we call it soccer over here because the most popular sporting codes are all football as well. it's a very complicated setup with who likes what but i live in an aussie rules dominated state and we call aussie rules football football and association football soccer because most people when they say footy mean aussie rules.
same with people in nsw and queensland. they're all rugby fans who call it football so they call association football soccer to avoid confusion.
and super rugby isn't that popular over here get your heard out of your ass whoever said that. it's barely ever mentioned here nowadays.
lastly, our team has been called the socceroos since the 20's so yeah. |

yeah lmao I follow Super Rugby and the attendances in Australia are awful, even in QLD/NSW.
The Wallabies do attract a lot of fans to their games on the other hand though.

Also isn't cricket a popular sport in Australia (albeit cricket in Australia's played in the summer unlike the AFL and NRL) thus there's a popular sport in Australia that isn't a football code?
