Never before in my life have I cried so hard. Not even when my own father died. I don't understand why that is but I'm getting off track. Iwata was a legend. A programming genius and a fellow gamer. Sure, a lot of celebrities I've really liked have died and that was a bummer but never before have I actually CRIED over their passings. Instead I was like "yeah, thats too bad. they were really cool." Iwata is different apparently. He's solely responsible for some of my childhood's most defining games and he's continued to define who I am well into my adolescence and early adulthood. He's formed tightly-knit communities of people who all just love to have fun. He's responsible for redefining Nintendo as a company. Before he took the helm in 2000 Nintendo was failing. He's responsible for compressing GSC so that we could be in both Johto and Kanto. He's responsible for helping Sakurai with smash. He's responsible for the creation of EarthBound, and it wasn't good enough, he reprogrammed it from scratch in under a week. He transferred and ensured compatibility of pokemon's classic logistics into the Stadium series. He's directly responsible for the creation of the DS and Wii lines of consoles and handhelds. He was a revolutionary man, bringing many innovative ideas to Nintendo. And beyond all else, he was a humble, modest man who cared deeply about his fans and employees. Last year, he cut his own salary because Nintendo wasn't doing so well.
His passing is a tragic event. The world will never forget his brilliance. All I can say is that Nintendo will suffer for a while without him. The flag outside my castle will definitely be flying half mast tonight.
TL;DR version (because RT is notorious for having the collective attention span of a squirrel with ADD that's hopped up on caffeine) - the man changed my life and shaped who i am and i'm crying like a little girl because he's gone. oh, and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vodd6C5ryUU |
