This is about the ROBLOXworld Smooth Terrain Contest, and is in the nature of a complaint due to the poor communication of the method used to ultimately decide the winners.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1 - In the original blog post dated June 12th 2015 announcing the ROBLOXworld Smooth Terrain Contest, there was a specific method outlined for deciding the winners of the competition. It is in the section entitled "RULES", and is the second-to-last bullet point on the list.

It states: "Winners selected by social voting via the contest app".
This is explicit. The winners would be decided by the amount of votes that their entry had received.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#2 - In the second blog post to do with the Contest, dated June 23rd 2015, there is stated, at the end of the final line of the post, the sentence "So go check out the ROBLOXworld Smooth Terrain Contest and help us pick the winners". The ambiguous part is in the phrase "help us pick".

This is an implication that the voting would not be the final deciding factor, contrary to the previous blog post.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My complaint is that this change of wording was not explicitly stated, leading to many members missing it and assuming that the voting was, after all, going to be the ultimate factor. I missed it. I know that at least one other finalist missed it, and would have got 1st place in his category had the original method been adhered to.

This discrepancy (the change in winner-selecting method) should have been more explicitly stated - i.e. "So go check out the ROBLOXworld Smooth Terrain Contest and vote for your favorites! Winners will be chosen by the admins based on their quality and votes!" This would have given everyone a clearer understanding of the selection criteria, and stopped hopes being raised based solely on the votes we could see.

========================================================================================

One final point. This is, as far as I know, solely my own opinion; but I feel it does have a bearing on this situation.

By changing the selection method to give the ROBLOX staff the final decision, you have effectively "belittled" your fan-base. Simply put, it seems you are saying "We at ROBLOX know better than the thousands who voted during this contest". Surely the people who spent hours of their time building these amazing creations have a right to decide the winners?

"I know that at least one other finalist missed it, and would have got 1st place in his category had the original method been adhered to." That's me...

I found a couple other threads complaining about the result. Here's a link to one of them:

I completely agree. Your Mount Rushmore looked like it took a lot of hard work and effort, unlike the 1st place winners selected. I wouldn't even have picked the 1st place winners for an honorable mention, much less as the winners of the entire contest. I was shocked when my place didn't even get picked as a finalist, but even more when your Mount Rushmore didn't get better than honorable mention.

Lel, I used that to make the general outline of Mount Rushmore, then used the terrain tools for the detail.

I emailed info@roblox.com with this original forum post - this was what they replied with:

'Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are always working to improve the ROBLOX experience. However, that doesn't mean we don't want to hear from our Community if you have feedback about a new update, event or ROBLOX in general. If you have an idea about how to make ROBLOX better or want to see something change, please post your idea on our Suggestions and Ideas forum.

Here is the link: http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=21

Our Community team reviews this forum daily for helpful ideas, suggestions and feedback from all ROBLOXians.

Sincerely,

ROBLOX'

It's quite obviously what's known as a "canned response", where the recipient simply selects a pre-typed email to send back. Apparently now I have to re-post this post in the Suggestions and Ideas forum, where an admin could quite well delete the post for spamming.

Great, ROBLOX.

That's okay - I personally didn't find some of the other contestants entries particularly inspired either :P

Anyway, this thread isn't about my entry at all. It's about ROBLOX's method of deciding the winners.

Yeah, I agree on you with the method bit.

Thanks for being understanding, some creators would have gone nuts on me.

I don't really agree with your point, though I see what you meant by the misinterpretation.
The winners weren't even that good? In terms of my standards.

IMO, It was better off that ROBLOX didn't choose the winner by number of votes. That only demerits the quality of some entries who couldn't maintain the voting lead. My good friend Arcrehnos didn't even get honorable mention for his quality entry maybe due to the lack of votes, and to be honest it's much better than yours: http://www.roblox.com/games/255392304/Petra-Jordan-The-Treasury

It should be self evident though, that ROBLOX wouldn't just choose by votes. They are implying on "Winners selected by social voting via the contest app". that the winners are individually favored by social voting. That means the more votes it has the more attention ROBLOX pays towards it, they don't just willy nilly pick a winner because it has the most number of votes.
Common sense, if I were to pick the winner by # of votes, and I see that the highest voting entry looks bad compared to the lower ones. Obviously I would see that some things were involved via getting those votes.

What I mean is that the problem with this kind of contest is that it doesn't become a fair representation of the ROBLOX community, but more on how many people you are able to convince to like only your entry, disregarding the other ones.

--btw ROBLOX didn't pay the finalists with their trophy, or give honorable mentions their pay -_-, nor promise to feature the winners on TNL.

We can argue either way about the winners and their respective merits, but that's not the point of this thread.

Your implication in your reasoning that it's better that ROBLOX chose the winners themselves is that the voting could have been "rigged". Well, I do agree in that; it's always possible that an element of "cheating" (so-to-speak) was present. However, no-one can be sure of it, and I'm sure that in the main there was very little, if any. In that regard, while we're on the topic, there is even more scope for "rigging" in the admins choosing their winners - surely you can see that just a few people deciding winners is a far more susceptible method to error than having hundreds vote?

Hopefully you can understand one of my main points - that of ROBLOX belittling their community by deciding the winners themselves. I also do understand your point that they did pay more attention to higher-voted entries in coming to their decision, but my main gripe remains. They have "ignored" their community once again - ROBLOX cannot keep having the final say, thereby degrading their fan-base and saying, once again - "We know best".

This next paragraph is not intended as a reply to you, but directed to ROBLOX themselves.

Why, ROBLOX? Why?
You can't be experts in everything! You can't decide winners based on the personal reactions of a few people, and bypass the results of days of voting!
You chose to partly base your decisions on the voting outcome - can you not see from the reaction that has rippled out from your announcement of the winners last Tuesday, that it is fair to say you have angered far more people by your choices than you have pleased?
You have chosen to studiously ignore this thread and all others with a negative response about the contest outcome - I ask that someone please respond, and thereby disprove one of the main points of this thread - that of ignoring your fan-base!

Also, please do not try to avoid responding by removing this post due to "hate speech". I am not hating. I am voicing the opinion of many members and laying out issues that need to be resolved.

Well as a veteran it doesn't surprise me that they would do this. I've entered many of their contests and what I expect to happen goes the opposite way. They've always had the system of being chronically late in their promises or forget them entirely. Or their decisions are not what I expect them to be. But life isn't fair so don't expect them to be. If it is their contest then they have the upper hand.

The only thing I would complain about are the rewards that they haven't given out yet.
