■▬▬ AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO READ BEFORE POSTING ANYTHING ▬▬■

This is the third revised edition of this thread. Previous editions can be found here.

First edition: http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=144364497 (Gained 13 Supports and 1 Non-Support)
Second edition: http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=144743468 (Gained 37 Supports and 1 Non-Support)

So far this idea has received 50 Supports and 2 Non-Supports. I will be constantly updating the Support to Non-Support ratio as this thread grows.

Also, this is quite lengthy compared to previous editions, and there's no TL;DR, so if you can't be bothered to read it, don't scroll down to the bottom of the page just to post "TL;DR".

I also ask that you please read every idea thoroughly. No skimming. This also counts for links such as the ones in idea #7. Go to those links and tell me your thoughts on them.

■▬▬ INTRODUCTION ▬▬■

Compared to other forums, the ROBLOX forums are very primitive. The only things we can do are either make threads or reply to threads, and that's about it. I suggest that ROBLOX's site designers should upgrade the forum engine to support HTML or BBCode. Even if the forums would have to be shut down for a few weeks or even months, the result would be well worth it. These are some of my ideas for what HTML or BBCode can do to the ROBLOX forums.

■▬▬ IDEA #1: REPLY WITH QUOTES ▬▬■

If we wanted to reply to someone on these forums, we would have to say something like "@ROBLOXRocks Yeah, I agree with what you said". But with reply quotes, we can properly reply to them, and whatever that person had to say that we chose to reply to would be displayed in a box above our post. This is also useful for curious bystanders watching the conversation from afar, so that they don't have digging around for what the person we replied to had said, especially if the person we replied to had said multiple things.

■▬▬ IDEA #2: AUTOMATIC SIGNATURES SPLIT APART FROM THE MAIN POST ▬▬■

While there are automatic signature extensions for ROBLOX on Chrome, your signature would still be displayed as part of your main post. Many other forums have a divider between your post and your signature, so that you can know what is part of the person's main post and what is a signature. This would also be helpful for rather confusing signatures. When my signature used to be "Not since the Accident happened...", I would often get a lot of people asking me "What accident?". This would prevent that.

■▬▬ IDEA #3: EMBEDDED YOUTUBE VIDEOS (SLIGHTLY CONTROVERSIAL IDEA) ▬▬■

ROBLOX allows YouTube links, so how about allowing YouTube videos to actually be part of the post? BBCode and HTML do make this possible with the ability to embed YouTube videos. Not to mention it also saves the hassle of copying and pasting the YouTube link. However this does seem to be a slightly controversial idea because there are quite a few YouTube videos that break ROBLOX's rules (Which may make some people question ROBLOX's recent allowance of YouTube links, but that's for another time) though I think that this could be fixed if a user control panel would replace MyForums (Which I'll get to later) where you could disable embedded YouTube videos, would be locked as being disabled for users under 13.

■▬▬ IDEA #4: EMBEDDED ROBLOX IMAGES ▬▬■

Sometimes people want to post an image of a ROBLOX site decal, but it can be a bit annoying having to copy and paste the link for the decal. So, how about having embedded ROBLOX site decals? Merely's Forum Enhancer has a control panel with an option that allows only ROBLOX site images to be posted, (Nothing offsite) and that's only a small Chrome extension. So with fully-fledged BBCode or HTML forums, offsite images could be locked as being disabled. Of course, some people may argue that due to poor image moderation, there does exist a few rule-breaking ROBLOX decals. This can be solved the same way I solved idea #3, and that's by having all images for locked as being disabled for users under 13.

■▬▬ IDEA #5: EDIT AND DELETE POSTS, AND SELF-LOCK THREADS AFTER BEING CREATED ▬▬■

We've all made an embarrassing mistake, say it be a typo or inaccurate information before, or have accidentally posted in the wrong subforum or in the wrong thread. So that's where editing posts and deleting them comes in. And sometimes you want a thread that you created yourself to die and be wiped off the face of a subforum, whether it be because you made quite a few mistakes or the thread just isn't relevant anymore. That's where self-locking threads after they have already been created comes in.

■▬▬ IDEA #6: BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE, STRIKETHROUGH, AND TEXT SIZE ▬▬■

Sometimes you want to express yourself or stress on how important something you're talking about is, or catch somebody's eye. That's what bold, italics, underline, strikethough, and text size are for. However, there should be a limit set. We do not want little kids spamming with entirely bold threads in huge text. Also, none of these apply to the subject of a thread.

■▬▬ IDEA #7: ROBLOX-THEMED EMOTICONS ▬▬■

It's not a very useful idea compared to others, but it's a fun one. We should have emoticons, but they should be ROBLOX-themed (Similar to how the LEGO Message Boards use little minifigure heads as emoticons) rather than be generic. I even have some concepts for what these emoticons would look like and their code names.

 would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Happy-Emoticon-item?id=183204643

 would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Sad-Emoticon-item?id=183204697

 would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Angry-Emoticon-item?id=183204763

:egg: (Only appears during Egg Hunt events) would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Egg-Emoticon-Easter-Only-item?id=183204846

:pumpkin: (Only appears during Halloween events) would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Jack-O-Lantern-Emoticon-Halloween-Only-item?id=183204988

:snowman: (Only appears during winter events) would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Snowman-Emoticon-Winter-Only-item?id=183205100

:santa: Only appears during Christmas week) would produce: http://www.roblox.com/ROBLOX-Santa-Emoticon-Christmas-Only-item?id=183205059

Emoticons could be disabled in the MyForums Control Panel, and when disabled, would only appear as their code names. And there would be a 3-emoticon limit on posts. Also, these are low-quality to fit in with the forum text size.

■▬▬ IDEA #8: CHANGE MYFORUMS INTO A USER CONTROL PANEL ▬▬■

In this user control panel, users would be able to set limits, (As mentioned earlier on ideas #3 and #4) change their signature, and view a complete list of their tracked threads and posts. Tracked threads would be displayed on a different page, and if the user has a lot of tracked threads, would be split into pages. Participated threads should be changed to Posts by this user, and would show everything the user has posted rather than just cut it off at the bottom and just do a cheap search for the person's username. Also, maybe users could have forum profiles with forum blurbs and other people would be able to see everything they've ever posted.

■▬▬ CLOSING ▬▬■

Those are all my ideas, at least for now. Since there are multiple ideas in one, though, you need to tell me which ideas you support and which ones you don't. If you support all 8 ideas, simply say "Support". If you don't support any, say "No Support" but give a reason for all 8. If you support some ideas but don't support others, simply list which ideas you support and which ones you don't. If you support 5 or more ideas, it's a majority Support and will be added. If you support 3 or less ideas, it's a majority Non-Support and will be added against the idea. If you only support/don't support 4 or you didn't give a reason for not supporting, then it won't be added to the ratio at all. As stated earlier, we currently have 50 Supporters and 2 Non-Supporters, and you can look at the previous two editions posted above for proof.

I like this idea, except for one phrase that stood out to me which was slightly inaccurate:

"Even if the forums would have to be shut down for a few weeks or even months, the result would be well worth it."

They would not need to be shut down, they would work on these features, keeping the forums up. Then they would release the feature one a specified date, updating the forums.

But that phrase does not effect this idea, so it's not really important.

Support, except for deleting and maybe editing due to it being too abusable. I would support editing if the post had a history of edits or something similar.

I support this overall, but I do see a problem with suggestion 3, youtube vids. Now, you pointed out the controversy of this already, so good on you for that, but it is a big issue.

As it is, youtube links are not moderated unless they are reported. As a result, some inappropriate video links have been posted. Now, I'm not sure how the whole law concerning law suits works, but I don't think Roblox can be touched for just a user posted link. However, if an inappropriate video was actually on the site, even if posted by a Roblox player, Roblox can take the fall for it and are vunerable to law suits if a parent/guardian of a child playing Roblox saw it somehow. Now, I'm not sure if that's how it works, so don't quote me there.

So the problem is this: How can these be moderated? Well, forum posts are posted as soon as you hit the "post" button. Perhaps with forum posts containing a video, they would have to be moderated before being put on the site. This could be done by the forum mods.

That's only one possible solution. At any rate, pop me down for a support. I think this could really advance the Roblox forums.

This is disrespectful, I know but I'm not going to read all that.
I'm all for any kind of updating of this outdated forum system.

I support you on the premise that this brings this forum up to speed with other forums.

Hell, I wouldn't be able to follow half the explanations on airsoftmechanics.com if they didn't have a picture uploading feature.

Yeah, maybe posts with videos should be moderated. Oh well, I'll save that for the 4th edition, which probably won't be until we reach 100 supports. Anyway, the ratio is now 54:2.

Support.
But don't use HTML.

HTML can be abused, and has no customizability whatsoever.
I could easily use CSS tags to deform the web page and break rules, without it being moderated.

Furthermore, HTML has the script tag which means people can make several unwanted scripts, such as stealing your ROBLOSECURITY cookie, or making you buying stuff without your consent. With well-crafted Javascript exploits, people can even modify your computer and render it useless.

Ideas to improve your suggestion:
1) Remove everything related to HTML. BBCode is just an customizable overlay for HTML, name it Rblxcode or something like that, I don't care.
2) Make Unicode the default standard using the new forum engine. It would be cool to post foreign characters (mostly in the international section) without it being replaced by ? or by squares for unsupported browsers.
3) Add the ability to disable signatures. Not all people want to see other's people ones, so they may just disable it.
4) Quotes can also be abused; you can modify the content of the quote to something they didn't said, causing controversy and false reports.

So that's it.
Great suggestion anyway.

@MrPhelps

(Regarding your unwanted lawsuit argument)

It's totally possible for Roblox to add a specific term in their Terms & Conditions that says that they are not responsible for any unwanted content posted by their users. That way, it can prevent lawsuits.

@Der

It's not actually possible.
All HTML-based post systems can't successfully disable any tags. They can hide the option to, but with manual editing it's completely possible.

BBcode however can be used to bypass this mediocre obstacle.

That's not true at all. Since it's a string that get's put into a database, you could easily erase the message by checking if it contained the script (or any other tag for that matter. It'd be the same system that they have that prevents you from posting HTML tags in the first place, except specific tags.

@Der

You should have said that from the start.
Anyway, you are perfectly right. Tho I am sure people will find ways around it, like the ALT+0157 invisible character that can make anybody bypass the filter with style.

And this, will cause controversy.
