While the majority of the backlash from this year's Summer Games has come from the fact that most users aren't interested in the theme, I am instead a little worried that the concept of sponsorship events is working against the ROBLOX admins' goal of providing engaging games for every audience.
Including third-party material within ROBLOX is nothing new, and they haven't been in the background; users openly raged about featuring Disney XD's Zeke and Luther television show being the focus of the then-original Skate Park genre, and even more angry when Transformers were the theme to build in one of the long-dead Contests. But after the admins tried including more interaction with the partners they joined with (a la The Three Stooges Brickbattle and The Boxtrolls Racing), although the admins presented sponsorships as being relatively exciting and fresh, the players made these occurrences fade into obscurity. Nobody even drummed up the motivation to threaten quitting the site over them. [1]
The recent integration of sponsorships within the "DEVents" that were becoming popular with the userbase has been a clever way of finally generating the best "traffic" towards the material that the admins are trying to market. Featuring promotions in recognizable games by other users, rather than the admins' original (and sometimes flawed) games guarantees that they'll be seen, and from a business standpoint, that's the right idea!
But my skepticism isn't with the corporate strategy or the products themselves - *putting promotional material in developer-generated games is giving the wrong idea of how game-creation should exist, and be presented*.
I levy my reasoning in a few points, with the first and MOST IMPORTANT being:
1.) The admins should not be asking developers to represent a company's products within the developer's property (several exclamation points here). Games should be games, and not commercials. Entwining developers to sponsorships is literally asking a teenager to hold up a billboard. If a person, who let's say doesn't know about ROBLOX's existence, wants to make a game for a corporation, then they walk up to the front desk of Cartoon Network's studios and ask if they can create a Flash game for kids to play on the channel's website. To rephrase what I mean, I think it's not only laziness that plays into the admins deferring to their users to handle these events, but poor practice to encourage such representation, because it serves as nothing more significant than that nameless game creator who's been bound by Cartoon Network to make mediocre games for a thankless job. I personally can't imagine a more duller fate for someone who needs to have their spirit for creativity kept alive.
2.) The community will begin and continue to harbor a dislike for game developers for their participation in sponsorship events. Developer events were thought of partly because the community wanted the admins to "get it right" and let other users capture the fun they wanted to have during the holidays. Not only has it historically been unsuccessful (Siege of Quebec, etc. [2]), it's hard to ignore the complaints around the forums that users think the developers are only in this for the money. Developers are supposed to be our champions of quality control and entertainment, and their inclusion in sponsorships is only worsening their definition to being considered as sellouts.
I don't want to start getting redundant and start stating the obvious of what other users are saying, like that sponsorships are killing the excitement of events, because I'm not trying to start some sort of riot and get people to leave the site en masse. We should be aware of these issues and unless this counterproductive direction is intentional, these points need to be addressed.
I welcome your feedback for I made this thread in the hopes that I find I'm not the only individual who isn't pounding on his keyboard like he's clinically insane because a couple yellow blobs are going to be taking up the advertisement space for a few weeks.

[1] - Thinking about it, actually, yes, there were indeed people that wanted to quit from these little sponsorships, however everyone else on the forums laughed them off and told them they were overreacting. Don't go pretending you weren't one of those apologists at some point. :) [2] - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxibhYNVnpU |

this of course will also be ignored they're making money. the fact that there is a target audience choice toward kids and the bs they watch these days, it's like a dream come true for them. like you said, there hasn't been anything done yet that was extreme, so i'm pretty sure they're just waiting for something like that to occur before they cancel out devents

| Just the fact that you put the effort in to make a thread as long as this with or without the knowledge that no one will care is just phenomenal. I congratulate you. Honestly I do. We need more robloxians that are willing to write this much when they make a suggestion in Suggestions and Ideas. In any case, keep up the good work. |

Good argument... Really nothing else to say about this other than that I hope the ROBLOX admins actually acknowledge this.

You see the problem with ROBLOX is that it has too much diversity. (say what you want about that)
