So I did some research into this, and it's actually pretty cool.
The personality tests you find online that give 4-letter personality types are actually based on a single test by a person named Myers Briggs. It's called the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator).
According to Myers, each person has 4 key traits to their psychological wiring, each with 2 possible options, and each combination of these options turns out vastly different.
There's 16 possibilities. The options are the following:
E/I N/S F/T P/J
~ E/I ~
The first letter represents the very base of a person's psychological wiring; whether they're (E)xtroverted (outgoing with their thoughts and emotions) or (I)ntroverted (ingoing with their thoughts and emotions). This affects the other letters, which will be explained later.
~ N/S ~
The second letter represents the perceiving function, the first of the two "psychological functions" every person has. The perceiving function is what's used to take in information in a way that makes sense. It's either i(N)tuition, or (S)ensing.
Those with intuition as a perceiving function are on the side of considering things with non-solid evidence. They generally like to keep their choices open, and never be set by a strict schedule.
On the other hand, those with the sensing function like to take in information that makes immediate sense to the 5 senses. They like real, logical, and strictly vivid information, and have a difficult time with the intuition mindset.
~ F/T ~
The third letter represents the judging function, the second of the two psychological functions. This is the function used to form opinions, express thoughts, and socialize. It's either (F)eeling, or (T)hinking.
Those with the feeling function are more likely to follow morals and virtue over logic and rules. They go with their guts, and many decisions are made using them as a deciding factor.
On the other hand, those with the thinking function are more likely to make decisions solely on what makes the most logical sense. They analyze and remember, constantly adding facts to their database of what makes good and bad choices and people.
~ P/J ~
The fourth letter (perceiving/judging) works with the first letter (introversion/extroversion) to represent the way a person aligns their personality to the world. Of the two psychological functions, N/S and F/T, one is the dominant function while the other is the auxiliary function. This letter decides which.
Those with perceiving (N or S) as the dominant function will use that function as their main way to communicate with others. They're generally more quiet and reserved, and spend more time taking in information than expressing themselves to others.
Those with judging (F or T) as the dominant function will spend more time directly interacting with others, starting conversations, and seeking out things to form opinions on.
If (E)xtroverted, a person's dominant function will be constantly visible to others, while the other will be their fallback function used only internally or under certain scenarios. If (I)ntroverted, a person's dominant function can be expressed at whatever pace and intensity the person desires, and their auxiliary function is used internally and nearly never expressed.
My personality type is INFP. It's really wicked and you should try taking a test. |

A breakdown of mine (INFP)
The NF is iNtuitive + Feeling. It means both my perceiving and judging functions rely on feelings, guts, and assumptions over logic. I'm more likely to make choices that make me happy and feel more morally correct, even if it's logically wrong or doesn't follow a set of rules.
The P means I use perceiving (the N in NF) as my dominant function. I spend more time taking in information than expressing things, and I use the mindset explained in the previous paragraph to do so. I don't form opinions on people easily and I'm constantly looking out for new things to overrule old ones.
The I at the start (introverted) means that my auxiliary function, Judging/Feeling, is used internally and not expressed to the outside world. My dominant function, explained in the previous paragraph, is used only when I choose to be social, and it's possible for me to hide it to "recharge" w/ alone time without it feeling incorrect. |

| @Jian I think I'm on the border. The first time I took it I was INTP, but every other time I've taken it I was INFP. |

I'm definitely an INFJ.
No wonder I've always felt like the odd man out; we make up 1% of the population! |
