Because marriage isn't a civil right, the state has the authority [not the federal government] to make laws concerning marriage. It is the state's job and the state alone.
Amendment X:The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

Too late now; The Supreme Court already made a decision.
Winning since 1776. |

"It needed to be legalized, but the way that happened, it makes me wonder if the government is getting to much power."

There is no such thing as "rights"
They are simply made up words people invented to feel they had the "right" to defend themselves when really there is nothing inherently wrong with killing.
Human "rights", given to humans by humans for humans. They are not rights.

actually, i kept saying that it was a privilege (which is also what the supreme court had decided) for the majority of the thread
you kept claiming that i thought it was a right, and making strawman arguments based on that
only once did i say it was a right, and that was closer to the end of the first page (and i corrected myself right afterwards) |

| Marriage is not legally defined in the constitution. Marriage can be defined as a union strictly between a man and a woman. This law doesn't discriminate at all because h0m0s3xuals can marry someone of the different s 3 x as well and receive the same benefits. |

What's wrong with letting them marry? Prind12 convinced me that barring them from hospital visitation rights and certain government sanctions (I don't know the exact words) was a morally right thing to support. And that's probably the only time I ever agreed with him on anything.
If it's because of Christian values, well, it doesn't change what God thinks, no matter what they call it. I think it actually indirectly insults God to say that it becoming legal would change anything. |

@Master, I am simply pointing out that humans have no intrinsic rights to anything, we just made up everything our society revolves around, morality, laws, rights etc.
No one has a universally given right to do anything, they can just do it.

except the definition of marriage has changed over time, and it's considered (and has been considered) a privilege that american citizens has
which means it's covered in the 14th amendment |
