Well, more of a statement question.
I figured out why it is illegal for states to secede from your country.
Britain has the advantage that it isn't a country right? If the UK falls apart, we'll just be independent countries, carrying on differently, but not catastrophically differently. We'll find our way to survive.
The United States on the other hand. It's in the name, if a state such as Texas or Alaska gained independence (I used these two, because in a poll they are the two most likely states to try to secede, Texas likely because it has enough oil to sustain itself and Alaska due to its Russian heritage, idk), then you would have lost a state.
Which means in the eyes of the world, the United States no longer exists, because it isn't United.
If just one state manages to secede from the US, the entire country collapses because it flies in the face of its name, its foundation and its existence.
So, this is my question. Is it worth it?
As a member of whatever state you are apart of, would you rather be an independent country or remain part of the United States, because honestly, if one state succeeds then you're all going down.
Oh and I've heard the argument "we'd send in the US army", that's all well and good, but what flag would they fight under if the US ceased to exist? And what would they conquer it for? Which state would gain control over the target?
I am just interested in what you would prefer. A United country of States? Or for your own state to become an independent country?

pfffft the US has a federal system unlike england's unitarian one
everyone is united and everyone agrees that there should be a federal government
perhaps only some people from the deep, racist south would like to be independent |

I like it the way it is.
Even if a state was to attempt to break off, they wouldn't last long.

| Only a few states would be able to survive on their own, and just because one state leaves there are still 49 united states. And to be honest, I would much rather see Texas independent so they stop their church and state bullcrap |

the secession of one state does not result in the end/collapse of a country remember that whole civil war thing? yeah
if texas secedes, it will damage the US but not destroy it
i could use the same logic and say that if wales declares independence the entire UK will collapse |

You seem to be under the assumption that the US will fall if a state breaks away.
Take the Civil War for example, when half of the country broke off, the Union (US) was will function and was able to beat the Confederates. The US will just go to war and take back what is theirs. |

TheStalin, oh the UK would collapse, it relies on all of our countries being united, but that's where we have the advantage.
The UK is a union of countries, so we could work independently.
The US is a union of states within one country, so it kind of has an issue there.

| Well, you see. Each state is basically it's own country. But it isn't labeled as a country. But, even if Texas did seceed Texas can still trade oil with us. |

@Dravum, it's called the United States for a reason.
If a civil war scenario did play out, let's say a second Confederacy or something, you'd need a new flag to fight under and a new name.
Because you aren't the United States if half of your states join a separate union, and your flag would mean nothing because there are quite a few stars on there that no longer belong to you.
Re-naming a country is no simple task either, you kind of have to re-do everything, so even if the remaining Union did win the war again, it would kind of have to re-develop itself.
Like when the USSR became the CIS and the RF, it didn't happen overnight.

Look, if any of the states left the union the rest would fight to reclaim just like the civil war. The side that wins would form the new united states. No sane state would try to leave on its own. It would either attempt to merge into a nearby country(like tf is mexico and canada gonna do? war the us? XD) or leave with a large group of other states so they could survive.
The states that left would have to figure out a way to destabilize the military(as the military could easily curbstomp any domestic troops/militia) and how to deal with the rest of the union+any foreign powers that may wanna prey on the now weakened US.
Utter insanity

Same question for the UK,
It's a United Kingdom, am I correct? If they all went their own ways...they would no longer be united. |

Republicans support secession while democrats are opposed to the idea.
Also, the South is what really brings shame down upon us. |
