Walk around campus a lot. It will help keep off that fresh 15 and you'll be able to mentally map out the place much faster so you'll be less likely to be lost. Be sure to check out all of the different student resources available to you, attend your orientations even if they're really boring, if you're living on campus be sure to get to know the rest of the folks in your dorm. Just introducing yourself can go a long way to helping resolve any problems in the future. Don't put off work until last minute, you're in college now and you have a ton more freedom so you're likely to slack off more at first but that's no beuno. Don't skip morning classes just because it's easy and you can, you'll regret it later. Read the course syllabus, memorize it if you have to that way you'll never be surprised by something.
And...not necessarily academically important but go to a home game for your team if possible. It's a rare experience that you can only really get at this point in your life. Wear your school colors, shout and be obnoxious with the rest of your schoolmates, it can be a ton of fun.
Oh and get familiar with Ramen noodles but do not ONLY eat Ramen noodles. If possible, keep some frozen vegetables around to spice it up. It's cheap, filling, and easy to make in a dorm room on the sly.
And above all, if you're living in a dorm with a roomate, be considerate to one another. You don't want to dislike your roomate.

| Also, be sure to phone home at least one a week or so. Your folks are going to worry about you and miss you. Don't let the only time you talk with them be when you come to drop off laundry or something. |

| In terms of that freshman 15, if your dorm lets you use meal points on fast food, don't start relying on it! Vary up your meals, eat healthy. Something I didn't do enough of is participate in more extracurricular stuff. Audition for plays, help out at the college radio station, get into debate. See what there is to see. |

"Walk around campus a lot." This. I had my complicated campus figured out before I started classes and wasn't late once. It helps a ton.
"Don't put off work until last minute" This too. At first I was surprised to find that university seemed pretty easy even compared to high school. It was an illusion made by the fact that I had more freedom. In reality, the work piles up fast, and the lack of studying shows harshly.
"Don't skip morning classes just because it's easy" Can't state that enough. I knew my Biology like the back of my hand and barely showed up. Although I passed, I only achieved a C where I could have easily gotten an A+. Furthermore, skipping a class makes you more likely to skip more classes. If you aren't diligent you will slack off and eventually fall off.
"Read the course syllabus" THISTHISTHIS I brushed off my course syllabus like it was nothing too important and was caught off guard by quite a few things that professors won't simply tell you about like they would in high school. Hindsight is 20/20.
Couldn't have said it any better Dapper. |

Good call on the meal points Briar. Trying to forage yourself a real cooked meal can do an awful lot for your mental and emotional state when you're living off fast food and coffee pot ramen.
Man college radio was awesome too...granted it was an awful lot of Bluegrass and old Chicago Blues but still cool.
You should step outside your comfort zone a bit too, talk with lots of people. You're on the first steps of adulthood, out on your own, with others in your same situation. Make a ton of friends, make friends with people you wouldn't normally talk with, just enjoy yourself and learn a lot. |
