And why are you asking this here? :P

Visual Studio is a trash language to learn. It's not useful at all.
I use the Eclipse IDE for Java development. Please note that Java IS NOT JavaScript. If you're trying to learn Java, just Google to find a good tutorial. If you're trying to learn a new language that doesn't have to be Java, Google Codecademy and take a JavaScript or Python course. |

Sorry, I meant Visual Basic, misspoke.
Lua can use ;'s. Just put them at the end of the line, it'll still work fine. |

Java is terrible. Teaches you to create overengineered rubbish.
I don't know why you specifically want a language with ;, but here's what I'd recommend to learn: Python or Ruby C Haskell |

| I would recommend C#, because it is my favorite language, by far. |

Java is good. It teaches you to program rather than simply code. Java is also good if you plan on making Android apps.
Learning C# or JavaScript is a good idea.
Look at the StackOverflow developers survey: http://stackoverflow.com/research/developer-survey-2015#tech-lang
That should give you an idea of what languages are popular (and therefore a good idea to learn). |

Haskell teaches you how to think about data types and other ways to think about code. Rather than using mutable variables, everything is immutable and there is no global state. All your functions are pure and Haskell uses lazy evaluation too. Very different way to code but the benefits are far greater.
I will agree about Java for Android though. You can use other languages but it's made for Java :/ |

| Of course, Microsoft thinks that making a language to go on systems they didn't make to be abhorring. That's pretty much the only downside to C# versus Java, as far as I care. |

| Oh, but there is not really a cygnificant upside to using C# over Java. |

@Jarod C# is multiplatform now, thanks to the Mono Project. Also, Microsoft has open sourced pretty much all of .NET. |

You guys are crazy.
Java is fantastic to learn. In fact, most businesses have back-end stuff running in Java. And if it's not Java, then it's probably C#. Because those are the popular languages to use nowadays.
Therefore, it's great to learn Java. The internship I'm doing right now has me coding in Java the whole day.
Use Eclipse. That's "industry standard" for most. If not Eclipse, then Intellij IDEA. |
