Here's the original thread with the chords and and lyrics:

And here's the twitter link to the soundcloud file:

I'm still working on finding what works with my voice, so it might not be the best vocals you've ever heard, but I gave it a shot and I'm not afraid to share.
Enjoy :) (maybe) |

Like you already pointed out, need to work on the voice. Eventually you'll probably need to add a band and some better recording equipment to add some type of level to the music. Also the high note is wayyyyy out of your range right now.

Also this is inspiring, I've always wanted to do this. And good job for a first try :)

I thought it sounded fun to try the high note lol
But really, if you listen to any current professional musicians, their voice stunk at first. I just need to find what's right.
And the high note is in my range. I just have had a bit of a throat cold recently. Haha. I'm sure I'll record this several more times when I have time to do it. |

it sounds like you have an issue playing and singing at the same time. you have a style very very reminiscent of NMH, which im sure is where you've pulled a lot of your inspirations.
i think you should post some files of you just singing, maybe practice ranges and control before trying to DT w/ a banjo |

Do you plan on getting a band or something? It's sounds a bit too raw with just you and your guitar. You need to fill up the sound.

Okay cool. Thanks for the advice. I'll try that. My only problem is it's hard for me to find singing practice time.
The good news is, my voice has come a long way because I didn't have the ability to sing at all about a year ago. |

@Plexa
Yes, I have a couple of guys that are going to be doing some playing to for all of this. One plays bass, the other plays brass instruments, and I can also play trumpet and musical saw so there's that.
And it's banjo. ;) I'm just strumming with a pick. Something about banjo with a pick sounds better to me than acoustic guitar. It might just be my taste. Haha. |

tbh i he can make just himself and the banjo work, no filling in required because it sounds perfectly good considering where he is and what his resources are.
like i said just practice singing. maybe try and sing songs in ranges you're not entirely comfortable with, just that sorta thing. and when you feel like you have a good grasp on vocal control, begin playing the banjo alongside your singing. |

Thanks to both of you guys.
I'm still planning to add the band in, not necessarily on this song, but on some other songs that me and my guys have been working on. |

| My computer microphone. I'm trying different recording methods in the future though. I'm hoping that I can make what I'm working on sound more underground than anything but I think that the computer mic sounded underground but just kind of bad. |

Do you have any tips on songwriting?

Do you mean the lyrics or the actual music itself? Because the music itself takes a lot longer than the lyrics. I spent a couple hours trying to write a trumpet part and/or a musical saw part to this and never found anything that fit so I ended up scratching that and just did banjo and vocals. I feel like it would go good with bass and a light drum set too.
But yeah, basically, try things, and if they don't work, try something else.
The words just kind of come natural. Find things that are meaningful and rhyme them. |
