bc what they did with 8 tracks and 4 tracks is insane considering those albums still sound way better than 99% of albums today production wise

behemoth - the satanist (i shouldn't have to explain this one. there is this sheer sense of darkness and evil wrapped around the entire album, but it sounds absolutely silky smooth. no instrument stands out, it all becomes this wall of sound. every instrument is tuned to perfection, even nergal's vocals. even before i liked metal, i liked this album. it's not brutal. it's intense, and still really heavy. but it's not a direct heavy from being loud or fast. it's heavy because of the sheer atmosphere created. when a mainstream album gets a 9/10 rating from anthony fantano, you know it's gonna be good.)
bring me the horizon - sempiternal (you may hate the band but you can't deny terry date is a really talented producer. every instrument is super crisp but at the same time blends in to create this insane sense of atmosphere. oliver's vocals feel like distant preaching from a podium, and the gang vocals are far better mixed than on their previous albums. it's amazing how a good producer can make a band associated with 14 year old girls feel epic and mature. https://youtu.be/mp3UVX6z9L8 is a shining example)
deftones - white pony (terry date again. he took the deftones sound to the next level. deftones wouldn't be the same band without him, that's for sure.)
machine head - unto the locust (that guitar tone... enough said. also by far their darkest and grimiest album as well, traits you don't hear associated with a mainstream thrash band.)
those are the four albums that stand out to me as absolutely amazing production that nothing else can get close to. |
