cpu and gpu are usually soldered to the motherboard in a laptop, hdd/sdd and ram is about all you can upgrade sadly.
also if you have one of those low power ultrabooks make sure the ram is the low power variant, i.e DDR3L SO-DIMM rather than DDR3 SO-DIMM |

what's the model name though? for example my el cheapo ultrabook i'm typing on right now uses an i3-4030U, if you search it up and click on the first link (should be a link to the official Intel website) it will show the specs and for memory mine says:
"-Memory Specifications
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 16 GB
Memory Types DDR3L 1333/1600, LPDDR3 1333/1600"
so those are the memory types and max amount I can use
if you have an intel CPU than do the same, AMD cpus are not so popular in laptops obviously because they tend to have high tdp's so they're more preferred in a desktop environment, but vice verse if you have an AMD cpu. |

@ Ruthless
"Memory Specifications:
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) 16 GB
Memory Types DDR3 1066/1333
Max # of Memory Channels 2"
so your best bet based on that would be 2x8GB DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM |

not sure the speed of your current ram but i'd say 1-3 FPS realistically, 5 FPS may be possible but that's being generous.
tbh unless you're rendering stuff in photoshop cs6 extended edition or doing video editing in sony vegas, you are better off with 8gb of ram, you wont notice wont much of a performance increase from 8gb of ram to 16 gb. if you have the moolah go for it
id invest more of the money in a samsung 840 pro and then go with 8GB of 1333 ddr3 ram for laptop. |

i think that's about it but either way the performance increase will be noticeable in everyday tasks.
the samsung 840 pro series of ssd's are blazing fast, if i recall ssd prices are going down. a hybrid ssd aka sshd is also another option but those i heard tend to be unreliable and not worth the cost.
considering your cpu is from 2013 your system most likely is up to date with hdd speeds, which is sata3 6 gbps transfer rate.
the Crucial BX100 CT500BX100SSD1 2.5" 500GB SATA is $179.99 on newegg so that could be a possible option of ssd |

@Darth. Alright. I'll buy the SSD, and the RAM. Hopefully I'll see an improvement. As for OS wise, what do you think? I've found the developers preview of win10 to be pretty fast. know any other good OS? |

tbh developer previews tend to be buggy but if you're comfortable go for it. this is just based on my experience with windows 8 dev preview
for now windows 8.1 + the ssd i mentioned + the ram i also mentioned should yield noticeable gains in everyday tasks.
cpu and gpu are 99.9% soldered to your motherboard like mine so that would make it impossible to upgrade those.
also since you have an intel cpu with an iGPU, to make sure you're getting the best performance then:
(I'm using Windows 8.1 so I'll use this for reference)
1. Click Windows icon
2. When you're at the Windows 8 homescreen click on the magnifying glass, search "Intel HD Graphics" and click on it
3. Click on Power
4. For my iGPU, my options are as listed: -Maximum Battery Life -Balanced Mode -Maximum Performance
so obviously click on Maximum Performance or whatever similar is listed for you
just make sure when you're out and about with your laptop to put it back on battery saved or balanced mode. oh yeah and make sure your drivers are up to date, specifically the drivers for your iGPU. those can help with performance too. |
