| Uh how is paddling painful? And it would be costly to buy em and you would need to go to the sea or a lake. |

| And either way, I would have attacked the teacher while she was doing so and pass it off as self defense. |

Paddling is just like detention, it is hugely boring, I mean, being on your own, in a boat.

| It doesn't sound like a good idea, what if a teacher abused the power? Yes, she could probably lose her job and end up in jail for child abuse but the damage would have already been done. No child should have to go to school being afraid of their own teacher, that's another thing as well, we students want to be able to have a friendly relationship with our teachers so that we can get along for the rest of the school year. You aren't really going to have a good relationship with someone who is bound to spank you just because you were talking in class. |

I honestly don't understand why anyone would be in favour of hurting others, except if there's a very large benefit (which this isn't)
I've always thought of corporal punishment as something from the past or undeveloped countries, something we don't have to fear because of our privilege of living at the right time and place.

Paddling doesn't involve spanking at all it involves boats, water and paddles.

Parents would get all pissy when they learn that the school paddled their child
There's a reason why it's not really done nowadays |

Well, I think there were some statistics on why spanking is harmful for children's cognitive performance, and teaches them that resolving situations with violence is okay.
However, students need a firm and disciplined, RIGOROUSLY followed punishment system. You do this, teacher calls the principal. No exceptions. You have a complaint, you go to them after class and consult them in a mannerly fashion about it. Like an adult. Hire teachers who know what the word "discipline" means and who can be trusted to follow it well. |

I think that it should be used but to some extent, if it's to be done then at least supervised by another teacher (more humiliation i guess) or something like that, but instead of the parents getting all "ohhh you paddled our child omg im gonna kill you", it's the parent's fault for putting their kids in a school that allows corporal punishment in the first place.
and not even just the parents, even the kids could abuse this, they would probably hit a teacher back on purpose or pretend that they had a really bad injury during the process, you never know.
my final answer: yes, but to some extent. |

No, I'm glad that they removed it in my country. In the one hand it would just scare the other "better" pupil of the school, children need a good environment at there school and being scared by their own teachers is problematic, they can't even trust their own teachers then, but in the other hand it can prevent hopeless situations for teachers, I've seen a report of a school where the pupil insulted the teacher and sometimes they did even hit them. The teachers are feeling powerless there, because the other punishments aren't really helpful, giving teachers the power to do that, would be helpful in this situation.
By my own experience I see, that it's mostly the younger pupils, the higher the age is, the higher the chance is, that the problematic children aren't even going to the school and the situation at my school isn't that problematic. And very often it depends on the teacher too: Is the teacher nice to the children? Is the teacher strict enough?Or Is the teacher fit enough (forgetful is a no-go)? |

No, because if it was one of the worse schools with bad teachers, the teachers could abuse their power and hit kids with little reason. Somebody is talking-smack. Dropped a pencil-smack. Asked a silly question without knowing it-smack. And it is also basically child abuse. If the teacher hits hard enough, the kid could get: 1. A huge bruise 2. A sprain 3. A broken bone 4. If the hit is on the head, a concussion could occur. Also, what if the parents didn't agree with the action and it still went on anyway? It's their kid and the parent shouldn't be anxious about their kid being hurt by the teacher. Also, as most people have said, the kid could fear the teacher too and that's not healthy. |
