I love assassin's creed but if I actually died a lot and people detected you like a real human being that would be much more fun I love Final Fantasy but if you level enough it's just. not. hard. I love Vindictus but I've been killed less than a dozen times in some of my profiles
can you imagine the massive potential these games would have if they were given a challenge level reminiscent to that of Dark Souls or, hell, even the latest Thief? personally challenge and the feeling of vulnerability at any point in the game is something that makes a game feel more rewarding and especially more epic.
you can't tell me Yiazmat would be fun if he was just a boring boss that occasionally hit you for midrange damage. you can't tell me that you want every game to play like a Call of Duty Campaign mode. casual games are fine and all but when every genre nowadays could be considered 'casual' in some sense of the word, I don't like that |

They don't make them because when the game is hard, players get angry. When players get angry, players quit. When players play the next hard game in the line, players get angry again. When players get angry again, players quit again. When players quit again, players stop buying games in that line. When players stop buying game in that line, the developers lose money.
Hard games are less common now because when game developers make hard game, they lose money.

"That's what she said."
I would have been disappointed if no one had said that.

"well nes games and such were made hard to make up for the lack of content yknow to make it last longer" yes I'm well aware that they did it to take money from arcade gamers and make up for lack of content but that still doesn't change that a grandiose scale is made even more grandiose when a game outputs the same difficulty level one would experience in real life or close-to-real life
"People still do. A lot." Indie devs are making a comeback for the concept but a mesh of the modern-day game with great aesthetics and a well-contrived story along with the difficulty of an oldie is perfect, take a look at DW8 for example; great game with a great story, with a battle system that made you think 2 turns ahead and also conserve your items and abilities.
"you're stupid" crap-posting on a legitimate discussion is just bringing everyone else down
"Hard games are less common now because when game developers make hard game, they lose money." just going to put it out there, Dark Souls 2 has sold 2.5 million copies. this isn't for its action-rpg style; DAI only sold 1.5m+ copies, which is a much more established series, and nor has poor storytelling been a good factor of that, which Star Ocean 4 can tell you plain and clear.
"If you want a hard game, just look up the game "Cat Mario"." joke games don't have an epic scale, hence 'joke'.
"That's what she said. You walked right into that one bruh" 'why don't people make hard games any more' unless you're Beevis and Butthead and just take everything out of context you are definitely just being an idiot for the sake of being an idiot |

"i don't care if games are hard just if they're really easy like binding of isaac difficulty is really good imo" binding of isaac is fine in that it brings a little bit of difficulty to the table in an unrealistic situation. it's also solely based on randomness, which means a little slack need be provided. but when your game is user-crafted, has an overall difficult premise to be tackled in real life, and a great story, adding difficulty is the cherry on top for a perfect game. I'm not saying it has to be ridiculously impossible, just saying it should feel memorable to beat.
"because people take them too seriously" never have I heard anyone say "a game that makes me passionate for what I do is a game I'd rather not make or play"
"you seem mad op this calls for this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6xzkzEyiQw" thank you for once again adding a horrible post to a legitimate discussion
"too keep your attention on it longer if a game gets too hard you're just gonna put it down and do something else" I get that but anyone who gets mad enough to throw a controller, start crying, etc. shouldn't be playing video games at all. i know that's not what you're implying but eventually perseverance leads to an allthemore pleasurable experience.
"try nuclear throne" thanks for the suggestion, what's it about? |

no it's marketing noob if a consumer finds your game too hard they will play another studio's game which may lead to them to buying their games which leads you without a customer |

you don't have to make it soul-crushingly hard, which is why dark souls was a loose suggestion in OP. thief is a perfect example because it balances difficulty with a great premise and great level design. difficulty is scalable for any player and the more difficult you make your game, the more you get out of it.
such is the way the Avernum games work; you can add buffs and stats to your player but it will lower XP rates and other things for the game, making it a less pleasurable experience overall. games should be scaled to add difficulty and slight frustration for a player, with the option to make something extra-hard for an added bonus or easier for a less grandiose experience.
not many of the games today do this, at least from my standpoint. there's an easy stretch, or the game never really increases difficulty after midpoint, or the game gets too easy at the end due to devs trying to bunch in optional content at the end. it's overall a lackluster experience because a developer is trying to scale down the difficulty for all audiences. |

"Dark Souls hard Hahahahaha"
i'm sure you think it's easy but from an overall standpoint, the game is difficult. MMOs and online games are only as difficult as the skill level of the other opponent, so for some they may be the only satisfaction one can get. which of course means a good online game should have base challenge and then only add more prowess once the human element is added. |
