Blades and Banners Weapons and combat system FAQ, Plans and More!
I’ll start off by going over what is planned and then go over some frequently asked questions for your convenience. Keep in mind this thread is just about the weapons and combat system not anything else that is going to be in the game. The game will have a ton of features and several things to do so keep in mind I’m only really talking about the weapons here in terms of what’s being planned. Everything else were doing is planned as well but I will not announce any of it during this time.
We hope to have around 7 different weapon types and 3 armor types based on their weight. Weapons we hope to have ready for the Pre-Alpha are: --Melee-- Broadsword Greatsword Mace Spear Battle Axe Daggers Shields
--Ranged-- Long Bow CrossBow ShortBow
Now an explanation as to how weapons work in terms of how many you can hold etc.
You have 3 slots for equipment in your Inventory. A MainHand Weapon Slot, OffHand Weapon slot and a tools equipment slot(we’ll be explaining that one more in a future post so hang in there with us for now)
Certain weapons can only be used as a MainHand and certain ones can be used as both main and off. For example you can MainHand a GreatSword and OffHand BroadSword to switch between if you wish. Also using the OffHand Slot is how you will dual weapons and apply a shield to your MainHand. Shields are only compatible with certain MainHand weapons(Broadswords, Maces, Axes to name a few).
Now you may be wondering “Why would I bother carrying two swords anyways though?”. Well weapons and tools have durability and the weapon or tool will break if not taken care of properly. You will need to get them resharpened and tended to by a blacksmith or sharpen it yourself temporarily with a whetstone. So keeping an extra blade on hand can be helpful if one is starting to wear away in the middle of combat. Please note that this is not something that will be added for awhile in terms of being able to test it out in the demo.
About the Demo: Often I get opinions that are rather rash about things or very negative. We appreciate all of your opinions and thoughts on updates. But it is important to know that this is a Demo test in a barely pre alpha stage. So things are not finished yet and should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said if you find something that you want to voice your opinion on please do so in a calm and civil manner. Also always keep in mind the issue you may have found with the system or the idea you may want to suggest is very likely and often almost all the time is something were already working on or aware of. There is countless times we get suggestions or bug reports that we already know about or have already been doing since the start. Thats not to say not to send them in though we do appreciate them all the same.
FAQ: These are questions I get frequently sent to me.
“Will I be able to dual wield weapons in the game?”
Yes you will be able to dual wield weapons, but not all weapons can be dual wielded. Also Dual wielding takes up your offhand weapon slot so that is something to take into account when considering it.
“The Demo place for the public to test the weapons isn’t always open. Why is that?”
Between updates the system can changed drastically and we don’t want you guys to test things out that aren’t fully completed to a state that it is at least “usable”. Sometimes between updates things aren’t ready for use what so ever, outside of a test in studio. For this reason the place is closed off sometimes but will be opened once a new update has come out for all you to try. If you want to keep in touch with when updates come out I will be posting on the Blades And Banners Group Wall letting you all know when a new one is out. http://www.roblox.com/My/Groups.aspx?gid=2560124
“Is what I’m seeing in the Demo place how it is going to be in game?”
Yes and very much no. The Demo place is barely even a demo it’s simply a small testing grounds we set up for you guys to play with what we have so far IN TERMS OF WEAPONS. I know sometimes when you’re waiting for a game to come out it’s hard to tell what progress is being made since you can’t see it all the time but trust me A TON of stuff is being worked on every day and is getting completed. The weapons are just one thing that we are able to show for the time being. Majority of things that get completed will not be shown off till launch. The weapons of course though could change as time goes on as bugs are fixed and the system reaches more of our goal of completion. So if things don’t seem too incredible just yet do not worry were working hard on getting it to the level where we want it to be at.
“Is combat something I need to do in the game? Or can I just be a blacksmith, merchant or anything else that would not require me to fight much at all?”
Yes you will be able to do pretty much any form of trade you like. So Blacksmithing for example is something you can grow in ability by practice. Your skills as a smith can allow you income between other players for repairing their weapons or even making them new weapons and tools. But of course that is just an example there is countless other trades that can allow you to get money in game and there is no limit to how many trades you can try to learn at once. A lot of the game will be based on player interaction so deals between players will be something we’ll want to be rather common. |

| As far as I'm concerned, the process of making Valyrian steel involves smithing it in dragonfire, and putting a spell on each time you fold the steel. The process to make it has been lost for 5000+ years. As for finding it, I'm sure you would be able to find Valyrian steel items and then reforge them if you're a good enough smith, since about 3 smiths from the Free Cities know how to do that. |

| There will be a select few Valyrian steel swords and items that can indeed be reforged into other weapons. When you get a new weapon in game, like completely new freshly forged. Its durability count is the highest that sword will ever have for durability. You can only repair a sword so much over time until it needs to be reforged again, which is essentially just recycling the swords metal into a new one. If you have a master level Black smithing skill you will be able to reforge Valyrian Steel items into new ones. Of course that is assume you somehow manage to get your hands on some. In terms of making Valyrian steel we don't think it'll be added and if so it'll be something that is very difficult to do. |

| When someone hits 0 health they will enter a downed state where they are bleeding out. At this point you can finish them off with a knife or a flash finishing move (if we decide to add those as a little something extra later down the line) or if they are your ally you can bandage them up and save them. Once you get up from being in a downed state you will start with less max HP than you had prior. To fix this you need to rest or see a maester. If someone is killed completely their loot will be there represented by a chest or something of that nature. Ideas for this are being thrown around a bit still in terms of what will drop. You will be able to retrieve the victims head to put on a spike if you so desire for bragging rights. |

Yes, we have mounts. Once you purchase the deed to a horse, you can create in a system much like your own character customization. The horse will have a favorite food that is randomly generated that will buff the speed of the horse if fed. Horse have many smaller features such as becoming skinny and slow if unfed, and being able to poo after eating. Horse poo can be used to fertilize your farm produce or be used on your weapon to create a high infection chance. This, however, is a last resort tactic as it drastically degrades your weapon. Mounted combat will be implemented in a distant update from launch. |

Will there be a competitive aspect to the new weapons? As an example, how you really needed to hone the art of sword fighting with linked swords. Being able to be leagues above opponents is something I loved about it. Having an in depth strategy to them would be quite fun, and in my opinion, essential. |

| The way weapons have been created allow for users to create their own tactics in how they're used. Successfully parrying an attack requires you to position yourself in certain ways and face certain directions. Swinging left, right, lunging and feinting your attacks introduce depthful competitive aspects. |

| Will people be able to repeatedly spam the jump key or will there be a limit to how much you can jump, i.e a fatigue stat? |

| I'm wondering if there will be some sort of script in that limits your jumping while in combat. Is something like that going to be implemented? |

| Also, on the topic of trades, will there be player-run shops? If so, how will they work? |

| To answer the three questions that haven't been answered above me. Yes Jumping will be nerfed greatly, not only will you not be able to spam jump, the jump itself won't go nearly as high as it does now. You will be able to trade with other players. In terms of player run shops you will be able too but the way it works isn't set in stone as of yet so I can't say anything in great detail about it as this time. Just know it is coming and will happen. |
