The money was not even going to the modders it was going to bethesda and valve.
Not to mention it would defeat the purpose of modding, come on it's not work it's volunteer work you should only be allow to work for donations that's it.
I rather make mods for free then everyone getting locked out of my mods.
And if you do not know I am the creator of "Protest sign:No paying for mods" don't believe me I have a forum post from the day I made it.
Paying for mods should be an option. |

Actually no, devs have to give permission for people to sell mods for their game.If you do this without permission you would get sued.Anyone who says "it their right" is either mislead or foolish. |

How long were paid mods even up for?
I didn't hear about them until the day they were removed. |

If they need permission to do it, it's not a right. |

the money doesn't wholly go to them. Valve, as always, gets 30% and Bethesda wanted 45%.
75% might seem like a ton, but its actually generous for things that are sold on liecensed things. book publishers can often take 90% of the profit from books.
Not to mention it would defeat the purpose of modding, come on it's not work it's volunteer work you should only be allow to work for donations that's it.
thats unfair to force your view on modding on everyone. if someone creates a mod and has a license to do so then it is in their rights to sell it for money if they think it is worth that much.

| imo a better complaint that i have against paid mods is that i think they should have to be moderated and approved from valve first to be sold but seeing valve's track record with Greenlight doesn't give me a lot of hope |

"thats unfair to force your view on modding on everyone."
That's funny because the greedy modders that want to sell their mods are forcing their views on other modders. Why would I make any more of my mods for free when valve's TOS for paid mods allows them to take my work, reupload it to the workshop and sell it? I wouldn't, no one would.
"if someone creates a mod and has a license to do so then it is in their rights to sell it for money if they think it is worth that much."
This is essentially community made dlc for lazy devs, you're insane if you think this is a good business model.

Thing is, most of the mods that were going paid, were either reskins of weapons/armour with some seriously broken stats, or had actual rigging issues, such as the shadowscale armour, with no female skeleton. You also had Midas magic, where the creator uploaded a paid version, and a free version. The free version, actually added adverts to your game, that could be triggered when you cast a spell, telling you to buy the "better" paid version. Funny thing, the paid version had a ton of stuff removed, as it had other people's code in it.
Not to mention, what happens if two mods conflict, or later break? Valve at most, will only likely give you one refund. And the mod creator may be unwilling/unable to fix the issue, especially if the mod's no longer actually making him that much money.

This system is a neat idea in theory, in that modders can get paid for their work.
Implemented, it was a steaming pile of sht.
Starshy already mentioned some issues with mods themselves. On that note, there's also SkyUI, which a lot of mods are dependent on. The creator was gone for years, then he came back just to slap a price tag on it when paid mods came out.
There's also the fact that you have to sell at least 400$ worth of mods to get any payout at all.
And the thing where the creators could just blow off the mod if it broke after taking their profits, thus leaving you with a broken mod and no way to get a refund.
And the fact that requesting a refund of a mod that you bought with credit card would get you 7-day-banned from trading. Which likely would end up getting you one mod refunded (if you bought several and wanted to refund them), because I wouldn't be surprised if they'd tell you that you can't refund that mod because you're banned from trading, and when the ban is finally lifted the 24-hour limit is far passed. Thus leaving you with a broken mod (or several) that you can't get your money back for, ever.
And how buying a mod and getting a refund still doesn't give you your money back, because it refunds to your Steam wallet. Buy a mod and get a refund? The money still belongs to Valve, and you will never get it back.
And how there is absolutely no control on whether two mods that you've bought even work with each other. Or any other quality control, at all. I've had several mods collapse on me only when I got to the area that they modified. And those was free mods, where I paid nothing and then uninstalled it because it didn't work.
