If you have at least a 7th grade education, you should be easily able to follow along with this.
First, we start with Hubble's Law. This is a law in physics that says "v = Hd", or the velocity galaxies are receding from us is equal to the Hubble parameter times their distance.
What is the Hubble parameter's value? Well, it's been measured by NASA's WMAP satellite as being 71.0 (km/sec)/Mpc where an Mpc is a megaparsec. A megaparsec is 3.09 x 10^19 km. So if we replace "Mpc" with this value we get 71.0 (km/sec)/(3.09 x 10^19 km) which calculates to 2.30 x 10^-18 sec^-1. Remember, this is still the Hubble parameter. All we did was adjust the units. 2.30 x 10^-18 sec^-1 is equal to 71.0 (km/sec)/Mpc. NASA just writes it the latter way because it's neater.
Now, velocity in Hubble's law, the v, is just speed. Speed is distance over time. Thus, v = Hd can be changed to d/t = Hd. All we did was change "v" to "d/t". Simply by multiplying both sides by t, we get d = Hdt, then dividing both sides by d, we get 1 = Ht. Now we can divide both sides by H and we get t = 1/H.
Let's take t = 1/H, and since we know what H is, just plug it in, and we get t = 1/(2.30 x 10^-18 sec^-1). This calculates to 4.35 x 10^17 sec. If we simply Google "4.35 x 10^17 sec to years" we get 1.38 x 10^10 years.
If we expand out 1.38 x 10^10 we get 13,800,000,000 years. 13,800,000,000 years is 13.8 billion years.
Now you know why the universe is said to be roughly 13.8 billion years old. It's simply due to a mathematical proof. |

wow thanks google
i learned never to go fishing with celebrities: jeremy wade caught a perch and said it was a river monster, billy mays cleaned his trout with a shamwow, and skrillex dropped his bass |

Just like the virtual particles all around you at this very moment.

You really think knowing 7th grade math makes you "very smart"? |

Yes, you can tell us HOW old the Earth is, but can you tell us why? |

@Sankoro
And I'm calling you a moron who think that knowing 7th grade math makes you "pretentious". The fact that you honestly think knowing 7th grade math and using it is "showing off" just demonstrates that you are probably far behind 7th grade math.
@Negatize
Eh, I did say why. Because of the mathematical proof. If you want to know how this mathematical proof manifests itself in reality, I can explain, but this leaves the realms of 7th grade math.
Basically, imagine a balloon that's deflated. Put some black dots on it with one purple dot, then begin blowing it up. You will find that the dots closest to the purple dot move away from it slower than the dots farthest away. That's Hubble's Law, v = Hd.
If you measure the speed they're receding from the purple dot and the distances, you can calculate a "H" value for your balloon. Then you can plug that H value into the equation t = 1/H and then you get the time your balloon has been expanding.
Essentially, Hubble's Law is a mathematical representation of the expansion of the universe, and t = 1/H just tells us how long it has been expanding for.

You know there's a little thing called "Google" you could check before making such pathetically stupid claims, right? |
