Think about it,

We'll have higher standards,

And if the devs are getting a cut, then a lot of games are going to start getting modable

It has it's ups and downs. It's good because there will be better quality mods and the people who worked hard to make them will get something in return, but then again if makes us have to pay instead of "If you like it then you should donate to the creator"

I'm not happy or mad about this feature, I am gonna try to stay optimistic and see where it goes.

My two problems with it is how incredibly easily it can be abused, and that the creators of the mod get 25%(seriously?) of what they sell.

Forgot to mention a good point I saw someone make; What if you bought a mod, used it, bought another mod, mods conflict and crash game. There's no problems here right?

@charlie
That's a good point as well. Maybe allow us to test the mods possibly?

25% of the money goes to the modders, 75% goes to valve and the game creators.

25% is not enough to encourage professional modding.
Modding is not a job, it is a hobby. This 25% will not make better mods come out, it will only make existing modders charge money for their originally free mods.

I hope paid mods are taken down. It is a horrible idea.

@Wiki This would potentially be an efficient fix for that problem!

My 2nd point still stands.

75% goes to devs and valve right?

Yeah that's got to make game devs want to have mods now.

Because it will make them money.

Meaning that we are going to see a lot more modable games.

I think that makes up for the bad.

don't most game companies have the thing where you can't sell their source code modified or unmodified in their ToS

@Mikey

I'd think so.
So I can't imagine every single dev/publisher would be happy having mods sold.

I can see why mods like Falskaar would be paid. I mean, with that dedication and all that work, I am fine with supporting the makers. But only 25% of that goes to them...

I think that they should have bright, built in donate button for every mod that encourages you quite frequently to donate through the downloading of the mod to donate to the hard working mod maker.

A bit of details, sourced from the Reddit megathread:

Steam is now offering modders the ability to sell mods on the Steam Workshop specifically regarding the game Skyrim, with 75% of the profit going to Valve and the game publishers/developers, and the remaining 25% going to the mod creator(s). The way the payment is distributed is decided by the publisher/developer of the game.
For this scenario that means:
Valve: 30% (as they always do in general)
Bethesda: 45%
Modder: 25%
The latter two have been decided by Bethesda.

Payouts are to be held until the modder receives $100 of profit.
Additionally Valve has implemented a Steam Workshop refund policy that allows refund requests within 24 hours of purchase. Refunds will be credited to the Steam Wallet.

There is also the question of what you do if a future patch breaks the mod, and the modder doesn't bother to fix it? What do you do then?

And then there's the greedy f*cks charging 1,99 for a single set of armour... yeah, no.

Also

Calling it now; Bethesda will announce Fallout 4 being only moddable via payment at E3.

On another note, there's a petition against this on change.org

23k signatories as of just now. Anyone want to guess how many PC gamers they pissed off with this?

@Lord, yeah, that's probably the fastest growing gaming-related petition I've seen in QUITE a long time.

Good going Valve.

Forgot to mention:

This is nominally PWYW.

If you want to pay 0,99$ or more, that is.

Also forgot to mention, anyone want to bet that if you want a refund on a mod, you won't get a reply for thirteen hours and when you do, it'll be "It's been more than 24 hours"?

"Valve: 30% (as they always do in general)
Bethesda: 45%
Modder: 25%"

Well, when looking at it like this, I think Bethesda was the super greedy one here and Valve was just doing what they do for all micro transactions. Not defending Valve, though. There were WAY better ways to go about doing this.

At the end of the day
This will only create problems
Problems for Valve, for Bethesda, and for the consumer

Why not have a donation button or something? If you like the mod you can support the developer of it. (If you want to)

Here's another problem -

Paid mod is bought
Files are downloaded

You archive all the files
Re-post to Nexus

It's illegal, but it's exploitable.

Plus, you can even get your money back with a refund and they can't take your files away.

THIS IS JUST STUPID.
