If you're splitting it half and half then you've actually got a pretty decent budget ($1000) for a gaming rig.
Anything less than that and you're gonna be sacrificing performance or watching your CPU burst into flames because it's AMD. |

@Otto
If you had any idea how computer performance is even measured or what individual piece of hardware does you'd realize that "running faster" is a moronic term to base anything off of.
List your specs and I'll scoff at them. |

@Insangelous
It depends on several things. If you're going to be playing really demanding games like Star Citizen or whatever the newest games are that come out that look really pretty, then you might have a little trouble.
If you have $850 and don't plan on buying a new monitor or if you can find a cheap case, you could actually make something pretty decent. |

Yeah, when it comes to building the core PC itself I personally think it's best to save up and buy everyone at once and then later you can upgrade your peripherals and expand out to two or three monitors as well.
In all honesty what you could do is get the best CPU you want, a motherboard (they're all pretty much the same, just make sure it's compatible with the CPU), a power supply, windows, fans, a disc reader, RAM, and a SSD to be used as a boot drive.
Everything listed there is what I'd consider part of the core of the computer and can't be easily changed unless you really know what you're doing. Fortunately, graphics cards aren't listed there so you can really not buy a GPU at all when you initially make your computer and save up and buy it later. Installing the GPU is literally grabbing it and pushing it into the motherboard. |
