Football (British) = Kick a ball into a goal, name makes sense. You use your foot to kick a ball.
Football (American) = Pick up a ball and run across a field. Just - what?

It's actually Gridiron Football, American Football is a variant of it. Rugby Football is different from Gridiron Football, so you can't call it Rugby Football. Also Soccer is Association Football, the term "Soccer" is derived from Association.
