I've heard that people infect websites like Skype with viruses when you download the OFFICIAL software.
I am pretty sure there is a new article about it somewhere brb

"that's not how it works"
actually you'd be surprised
malicious users will often find ways to get into legitimate websites and install "shells" which are backdoors that allow them to access the website again later
sometimes, these malicious users will install (and even spread) code that will silently download and run software on the systems of people with vulnerable browsers who use the website or download files
this is usually in medium sized company websites, not huge corporations like Skype
it's not common, but not unheard of either |

the point OP is that there's lots of ways people can get infected, let me list some from the top of my head
1) straight up shameless malicious websites (malicious downloads, browser exploits) 2) freshly crypted malware bundled in torrented software (i.e a big chunk of "cracks") 3) another person on your network exploiting LAN file sharing 4) MITM attacks (traffic redirected to fake sites from inside your network) 5) crapware bundled with legitimate software to make more money 6) any kind of social engineering that a lot of people fall for |

"have common sense"
people who want to infect people like you take advantage of your over-confidence
some good antivirus software is seriously a good idea |

Except I'm not an idiot
Do you really think I'd use a vulnerable browser, or even do my normal browsing in my regular machine and not a virtual machine? |

why the hell would you do regular browsing on a virtual machine
you're making things 10x more difficult than they need to be, just get AVG and malwarebytes and scan every week or two |

| it's funny how you're against using antivirus yet you're paranoid enough to do browsing on a virtual machine that likely cuts your computer's resources in half |
