first, open up task manager and go to the performance page.
keep it open until you get a lag spike.
See what shows up.

task manager> performance
look at CPU, memory, and disk. see if there's any spikes
if one of them are under load, go to processes and click on the one that's under a lot of load to bring the highest usage app to the top
then end the task, as long as it isn't a windows application like explorer.exe, winlogon.exe, stuff like dat

sry if u don't have windows 8, works the same way on 7 but just looks a bit different

If you have vista or, god forbid, XP, then you're out of luck, bud.

@pow
task manager still works the name in vista and xp
just every version gets a better look and adds more features

If he has vista or xp, he has bigger issues, though.

xp is still the most solid OS imo, vista is something we do not speak of
the only problem with xp is consumer versions are x86, i'm pretty sure the recent service pack was x64 though

you can just wait in processes and see if a spike happens there. just make sure you put memory usage from biggest to smallest

Computer specs? Programs running?
Random spike doesn't help |

@leposh
considering he's asking for someone who is smart with computers, i'm guessing he doesn't know the specs exactly
