| I get bored or lost too easily. By lost I mean I want to do too many things at once and so I end up not doing any of them and playing games instead. I want to code, but I can't figure out what to code. I feel it may be a motivational thing. How do you guys start and finish a large project? |

it has to be something you want to do
for example
it would be really cool if i made a scale model of Argentina
but i do not have the want to actually even draw an outline of Argentina, so there is no way i am making it on roblox
it has to be something you like, or that you are insanely interested in
the sort of thing you research or obsess over already
and cannot live without seeing on roblox
and will do whatever it takes to make it happen
or at least that's my experience |

Okay, I think I know what you mean, but just to double-check to make sure your problem is exactly like mine:
I love to code. I can't stand focusing on the same thing for a while though, because I get bored of if. I have the most fun when I learn or I organize. Through organization I have been able to press through some scripts I used to not be able to do. This is supposedly caused by Aspergers Syndrome, but I'm not sure. Whether it is or isn't, it doesn't change anything. I am trying to get into the Roblox developer forums but I can't make myself complete large projects. I have lots of motivation, but it isn't enough. When I am bored, motivation will not do anything to help me.
Is that similar to how it is for you? If it is, I don't have a solution. If it isn't, I don't have a solution. |

Very similar, but I think you have misdiagnosed. The proper term is ADHD lol

| You have to have a really inspirational idea, but most of all you have to do it whether you like it or not. There will be times when you're working on your project and you want to quit, but don't. |

My Professor told me that a lot of planning and code design is how you tackle a large project. Then she assigned a large project and had us design it before we could code it. I probably turned in only half of the design assignments but did much better than anyone else in the class...
Which frustrates me to no end as to why I cannot get myself to do something on my own! Perhaps because no one else is there to tell me to do it? |

Lol that is the worst advice for me. If I plan in detail how I want to do something, then when I go to code it, it is extremely boring.
I haven't done it for a long time though, so I guess I'll try making flowcharts again, but that might lead to what I mentioned above. |

"My Professor told me that a lot of planning and code design is how you tackle a large project."
depends on the project
for software dev this might make sense maybe, but for a roblox game? lolno
a feature list yes that's great, or names of scripts you need to write...but code design is just too far. |

| When she gave us the project all I did was write down the fundamental ideas and abstractions of the code. I left out the actual code parts. I did however outline how certain modules would work. |

If you want a solid and well-made project, it is very important to plan it out first, at least to where you can follow an outline to complete the basics so you don't find yourself halfway in focusing on a tree branch instead of the overall system(get distracted by details and making it look perfect before you even have the working system).
make an outline
create a rough model place
and then brainstorm after you actually have something |

| That sounds like solid advice. A friend of mine likes to focus on making changes that he can see first like a working GUI or animations. He said if he doesn't see progress made after a while he'll get bored and quit. |

| That is me exactly. Okay, I'll do flowcharts next time I code. |

WARNING: There is no TL;DR for this post. But I still think you should read it. ^^
For me, the real trick has been collaborating with others and surrounding yourself with other people who have a positive attitude. A few more specific things that help me:
* Taking regular breaks. Not breaks as in grabbing something to eat and going straight back to your computer, breaks as in doing something else completely for more than 15 minutes. My development breaks usually consist of playing games or discussing with other developers. Social interaction is key, because it gets you going.
* Telling someone else you're going to do something. This usually makes you want to do it more, because you know someone else is counting on that you will do it, and will get disappointed if you don't.
* Working on something and setting goals together with someone else. You can have shared goals that you both contribute towards, so when someone is getting lazy or isn't really in the mood, the other person(s) can pick up the slack.
* Making lists and planning (as you've mentioned). I regularly use Trello and make lists for every project I make, which is especially useful for collaborating as well. Divide the tasks into smaller sub-tasks and put them in a checklist. This ties in pretty well with the last point:
* Snacks and working out! This is probably what has helped most. I don't just indulge whatever food comes close when developing, I put it on my desk and tell myself that I cannot eat it before I finish a certain task. And as for working out, believe it or not, the more bodily active you are, the more active your mind seems to get and as such you want to do things more.
Keep in mind most of these things mentioned aren't really specific to developing, but work for normal life things as well :P
