This joke of a franchise has a culture of entitlement that is absolutely breathtaking.
Kevin Lowe failed his way into a President of Hockey Operations position.
Craig MacTavish was handed the reins as GM despite having no experience at all. The team didn't interview a single candidate for the position before giving it to him.
Dallas Eakins was handed the head coaches job after a single interview for an assistants position. He impressed our rookie GM so much in that one interview that he fired our best coach in the past 10 years, Ralph Krueger, over Skype. No other coaching candidates were ever considered, and Eakins was MacTavish's first interview for that vacant assistants position.
We fired our goalie coach Freddie Chabot and IMMEDIATELY promoted another rookie assistant with zero NHL experience who is already in the organization. Who has time to do boring stuff like job interviews when you already know a little bit about winning, if that's ever a concern?
Our top line players have never had to beat out anyone for a roster spot. Hall, RNH, Yakupov and Draisaitl were gifted their spots on the team (and in the top six, and on the power play). Pääjärvi and Gagner were similarly given gold plated roster spots without ever setting foot in an NHL rink. Schultz was anointed a #1 defenseman before he ever set a skate blade on an NHL ice surface, and seems to have been contractually given 23 minutes a night and prime powerplay time despite the fact that he plays out of position for almost all of those 23 minutes.
We gifted the captaincy of our hockey team to Andrew Ference, a guy who had never pulled on an Oiler jersey before, just because he's a veteran and he's from Edmonton.
We gave assistant coaching jobs to Craig Simpson, Steve Smith, Charlie Huddy, Mark Lamb and Kelly Buchberger. Outside of Huddy, not a single one of them had any pro coaching experience whatsoever. The common thread? They all played with Lowe and MacTavish on the Oilers cup teams in the 80s.
We pissed away draft picks on Dillon Simpson and David Musil, who are both kids of former Oilers alumni. Frank Musil is still one of our scouts. Also pissed away a roster spot on Will Acton, son of current assistant coach and '87 Oilers alumni (surprise surprise) Keith Acton.
We gave a scouting position to noted hockey mind Dave Semenko.
The only guys to be removed from their positions (not voluntarily leave) in the decade long tsunami of failure have been Dallas Eakins, Pat Quinn, Tom Renney, Ralph Krueger and Steve Tambellini. What do all of those guys have in common? None of them ever laced up a pair of skates with Kevin Lowe or Craig MacTavish. |
