I've been wondering this for a while and never exactly understood how it worked. My questions are:
1. Do smaller hats have smaller hitboxes than large hats.(Like Shades to dominuses) 2. Does the number of hats you have on increase your hitbox.

Gun scripts work in one of three ways. If the ray hits a hat, the script either will ignore it and not damage the player (allowing for hats to be worn for protection), or alternatively to treat the hat as part of the player and damage him if the ray hits the hat. In other gun scripts it takes the hat off if it hits it.
In Studio you can see the hat's hitbox, the blue box, when you select the hat.
Depends on the gun you're working with.
Number of hats doesn't matter, each hat has its individual hitbox.
It isn't about the size of the actual hat, it's about the size of it's hitbox. Larger hats do tend to have a larger hitbox though. |

First we need to dig into the code.
The first ray cast guns would make ray casts that if intersecting with a part will check if the parent of the part is the player. This worked fine and all but there was a problem. Hats. Hats are an Instance but alone are nothing. Inside the hat is a part named handle. When the Ray cast shoots this part, the parent of the part is not a player but is handle. Due to this no damage is dealt. Players could wear hats in such a way that they would block most of their body.
The fix for this is simple but took a while for people to realize for some reason. You have an else if checking if Handles parent is a hat/tool, and if those are children of the character damage is dealt.
The hitbox is the Handle you can look at any hat in workspace and look at handle to determine how but he hit boxes are. |

"Larger hats do tend to have a larger hitbox though."
Mostly true, but I've seen a plethora of small hats with gigantic hit boxes, and vice versa. |

Yes due to the nature of hats as I have explained, the hats may not have a precise hit box around them leaving a larger hitbox. Take the current hat I am wearing.
The hat size itself is only how ROBLOX will render it |

Hats are bricks which are different sizes. Some are small others are big. To keep hats from blocking damage, gunscripts considered hats to be part of the player. If you shot the hat you shoot the player.
Yes, we're multiple hats will increase your hitbox. |

Well it depends what multiple hats they are.
If you have 3 swordpacks on (huge hitbox btw) won't make much of a difference for having 3.
Having Socialite on is like suicide for some guns. |

All hats have a hitbox. If you're asking which ones have disproportional hitboxes, then you should've worded your question differently.
(It's technically called a "hurtbox" btw, since you don't hurt people with the hats.) |

depends on the gun scripts
if the hat is on an ignore list for the standard raycast gun, then it ignores it
if not, there may be a part of the script that checks it
