It doesn't protect you from other people. That's why the government doesn't interfere with Westboro Baptist protests unless they get violent. However, you can interfere in ironically fun ways, including dressing up as Jesus (or getting many people) and hold a sign saying "God Hates Westboro Baptists".
If they want you arrested, you can claim they're basically doing the same thing.
This doesn't just work on Westboro Baptists; it works on any people protesting views you don't like.

@Incomplete There is a law against disrespecting a government official, whose constitutionality has been debated.
Actually, in a short bout of research, "Contempt of cop" is legal, but rude.

bump Also, your right to free speech doesn't apply if the person telling you to shut up isn't doing it on official government terms. That guy screaming racist obscenities? You have the right to shout at him until he pipes down, but he has the right to not pipe down.

No, I just like posting information. Surprisingly few people fully comprehend what the right to free speech entails.

@Phen Said hate group's speeches are protected by free speech, but not their actions beyond that. They can say their views, but acting upon them is not protected.

And free speech doesn't really exist.
Lets speed up to the Sedition Act. Talking bad about anyone in office got you in prison for spreading treasonous thoughts.
And you thought America was always pure. |

I never said it was always pure. At this specific moment, I am referring specifically to the amendment. Laws that violate it for no good reason will eventually be ruled unconstitutional, even if it takes a long time.

IS the president seen as a government official? Cause if there is a law that says you cant disrespect them then many, many people would be in jail for saying stuff about the president.

@Phen Given recent rulings, it seems to not be, given that Westboro Baptist church and other institutions can protest and hate on people who are more interested in their own gender than the opposite gender with minimal punishment, as long as they remain otherwise civil.

@paylay
From what I have read, you are actually given more rights to speak against public officials than just everyday people, because they are more likely targets for such. |

@mega That would make more sense to me, but Dan has stated that there is a law saying otherwise.

Actually, I had assumed there was. It turns out that there isn't. It's just rude. However, if you have committed other crimes, it can be added to the list, it seems. No "Rude to officer" as the only offense, but "Robbed bank, rude to officer" can be.

Thank you, internet stranger. Prior to this post, I had no idea how to spend my time irritating such a group of irate Christian fundamentalists without them alerting attention of authorities, but now you have brought this to my attention, I can finally dress up like a scantily clad black Jesus whilst mocking their beliefs, knowing full well that I am only doing what the founding fathers intended.
Thank you.

"At this specific moment, I am referring specifically to the amendment. Laws that violate it for no good reason will eventually be ruled unconstitutional, even if it takes a long time."
The amendments are just there to look cool. Don't do anything.
The constitution has been used as TP for the longest.
The "protest" [demonstrations] that the WBC does always gets broken up. And it leads to even more stupid demonstrations to stop WBC from picketing a funeral.
To even be called a protest it has to go to the City Hall and be approved now of days.
The amendments are just there to dangle off of the constitution. |
