So I just read an interview in a magazine in which E.L. James answers questions about her bestselling trilogy. She was inspired by Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga. After reading the Twilight books, she began to write her own series and ended up making Shades of Grey. Ladies and gentlemen, Twilight has left a scar on popular consciousness that may never heal. Anyway, James is annoyed by people who read into her books, because they aren't supposed to be anything more than a mindless escape from reality. She admits that Christian Grey would be a horrible man in real life, but in a book, he's desirable. I haven't read the book (mainly because my mother won't let me) so this is all just speculation. What do you guys think? Have you read the series? Seen the movie? Thoughts? |

okay
but i've read excerpts online, and it seems terrible. poorly written, bad plot line, and a failed attempt at covering up abuse with romance |

Books are one thing that just shouldn't need such vulgar things.
Authors should be better than that! :^( |

@Residue Yeah, that's becoming more of a problem in recent years. Lots of critics have been criticizing authors like Suzanne Collins, E.L. James, Stephanie Meyer, and Cassandra Clare of writing very "fanfic-y" stories. I think it has a lot to do with what we've come to expect from young adult fiction. |

| i've never read stephanie myers but i've read clare and collins, and i found the hunger games to be sort of flat. there wasn't a lot of diversity to her word choice, and i felt like i was skimming on top of it rather than being in-depth with the characters. |

@Lova I know but there is no real reason to add these to books.
Like many say, any dummy can say bad words but only a person with great discipline can never use them! |

I haven't read Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Saga either. I own Clare's The Mortal Instruments series; I think they're unnecessarily long but engaging enough. The writing isn't the greatest but it's passable I guess. I was interested enough to keep reading all of the books. Collins's writing was pretty weak, especially in the 2nd book. To her credit, she was rushed to finish the last two books after the first one became extremely popular. I understand what you're saying though. It's pretty flat. |

@Box I understand what you're saying, but not everyone has the same mindset as you and I. You can't expect everyone to think alike. Writers will pander to their audience in order to reach popular audiences. |

@Scy That's not really the focus of the trilogy (as far as I can tell). |

@CDii Fair point. I don't find myself engaged in novels with overdone concepts unless they can incorporate something new or interesting to spice it up. From what I've heard, James tries to do this by adding... umm... "stuff" to the novels. I can't really explain it here... but I've been told that she misrepresents that particular community, so it fails in that aspect. |

@Fell 1. hi fell, howr u
2. Yeah a lot of people have been saying that, and I can't blame them for saying it. It does seem like an awful series, but I can't blame James for capitalizing on a particular demographic by pandering to them. She's just taking advantage of a an opportunity to make a ton of money off of a sellable concept. I may see it as immoral (I do) but I can't hold her to my morals.

2. In my opinion she's a scumbag for taking advantage of something like that. And her book sucks and it's poorly written. Deal with it.

I hate when a book says it's like another popular book. (i.e. the Hunger Games)
It just leads me to believe it's a rip-off of the original text and doesn't have any more-than-mediocre content in it. |

Ehh, like I said before; you can't expect people to live up to your moral standards. Different people think differently. Par exemple: You think she's a scumbag for taking advantage of unsatisfied middle-aged women; Whereas I don't mind it as much (Yeah, I think it's brainless, but it has a right to exist). |

@Max Comparisons are bound to be made whether it's intentional or not. Honestly, at this point, pretty much everything has been done and we're just recreating it. At least, that's how it seems. Who knows for sure? |
