So, I want to take the general concept of medieval fantasy and apply it to a modern-esque setting... which pretty much negates the medieval part. But, I was thinking of setting an RP in a city like this:
http://andreewallin.deviantart.com/art/Bridges-346541431?offset=75#comments
The setting would essentially be a modernized fantasy world, where a wide range of races, both generic and exclusive to this RP, are still present, but they would identify with an early-20th-century-esque culture (fashion, *technology, etc.)
*A note about the technology: I would rather take a different approach to science and tech, where most of it is powered by different styles and forms of magic. The kind of magic in this RP, though, wouldn't be wieldable by most people. It would derive from natural resources, just like in our world, and it would mostly apply to technology. I'll make exceptions to this to preserve that fantasy atmosphere, though.
That's all I've got right now. What I need now is a central focus for the RP. Maybe the modernization of the city via magical resources has spawned a lot of social issues that have impacted our characters? |

Good idea! You're gonna have to put away your trilby before flogging though. Safety reasons or whatever. |

We digress now.
So, uh, Wifi, do you have any proposals? Would you prefer to have the central focus be social issues of the time - maybe even mirroring historical events like the Great Depression - or something more true to the fantasy setting (e.g., large-scale phenomenon, traditional villain, etc.) |

I can't collab much right now, but I definitely want to go for some social issue mirror to our world. Since its fantasy it could maybe reflect our slavery era, or maybe Crusades era.
If you prefer something less violent maybe something like the Great Depression or something. I'll think of an idea and get back to you. |

Okay, so you don't think the early-20th-century-esque setting and the social issue(s) need to have any correlation? I'd be down with that. I think that the slavery idea might actually be a good idea. Maybe it could tie in with the Great Depression-esque social issue, should we use that.
Or maybe this could be the post-slavery era, where the previously enslaved race is crusading for equality (or the 1860s-1960s in real time). |

| Yeah, something like that. But maybe more of a pre-Civil Rights movement, where the oppressed are just beginning to find a voice. And maybe slavery has not quite yet been outlawed in some parts of the world, but that's what our characters might be striving to achieve. Perhaps our characters are members of an organization that aim to unlawfully liberate slaves and thus put them on the government's radar? |

I'd live for this to be free roam. I like roleplays where there's a vast, wide, unique city with factions each trying to accomplish their own ends by controlling you, when in reality there's a much larger scheme. Blah blah blah.
Some unique items and weapons (I DON'T MEAN GUNS I SWEAR) would also enrich interactions, IMO. |

Ooh ooh ohh. What I was thinking is that the RP follows the search of a face to a future "rebellion", like how MLK was the face of the Civil Rights Movement. It doesn't necessarily have to be all physical, but it gives us the flexibility for diplomatic and psychological/sociological approaches.
Or maybe just go for something along the lines of Inglorious Basterds |

That would work too. That would probably encapsulate the themes of the RP a little better than focusing on one specific organization. The problem with having multiple factions, though, is that generally, the RPers are either divided sparsely among factions or none of them join a faction at all. |

*love Damn you tiny fingers.
Yeah. But joining factions don't have to be mandatory, and it allows for miny plots to develop into the main plot overall, which is I don't know. |

...and this could probably tie everything together. I like this idea, as well as Rock's. So maybe the RPers are free to choose what their ambitions and motivations, but the central focus is finding this 'face' that you mentioned. That would encourage interaction among RPers (some might be trying to find this face, others might be trying to stop them to suppress the movement before it begins). |

Oh, and who do you suppose should be the oppressed, and the oppressors?
I was thinking that perhaps the more human races (elves, dwarves, and of course, humans) are considered the superiors to the "lesser humans" (trolls, orcs, whatever we use). Centuries ago, the humans could have been the superiors to all the other races, but over time, they came to admit any interchangeable creatures into the fold. This would really highlight just how narcissistic and self-indulged humans can be. |

Or how about the opposite, where the orcs, brutal races, etc. Rule the entire human race on the small setting where the story takes place. The humans, growinf tired of this mistreatment, launched a massive revolution. The humans win, and a peace treaty is signed. At the place where the peace treaty is signed, there are seven commandments all races must follow.
Soon after, many humans are discriminated, and a revolution is on the rise, sort of.
Seems like a simmilar satire of Animal Farm. |
