E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo): A convention in June where many releases and reveals take place. This is a great deal of excitement in the video game community because it essentially gives a launch lineup for that year and the next few as well in some cases.
EA (Electronic Arts): Commonly regarded as the worst people on the planet. They have a track record of buying out game studios only to destroy them or make them perform abstract changes on games that would be otherwise masterpieces (see: bioware/SW:TOR). Their titles still widely sell due in part to marketing to casuals.
Activision-Blizzard: Slightly better than EA, they have a record of churning out some casual games (CoD) and making games designed for a more niche audience open to casuals (Starcaft), but they do a fantastic job at keeping up regular content updates on many of their IPs.
Bethesda: Slowly degrading towards the Acti-Blizz level, they've turned multiple wonderful series to casual games for the sake of money. Skyrim and Fallout 3 are examples of this, Morrowind and even Oblivion were high points in the TES series but Bethesda successfully made them more 'accessible' for cash grabs. Dishonored was a nice breath of air, despite some reported on-disk DLC.
Obsidian: More for a Niche audience that enjoys D&D type games with story over gameplay in mind, but they have some fantastic must-play titles such as KOTOR II and Planescape: Torment. They recently finished their Kickstarter which got nearly 4x what they wanted originally, under the project name "Project Eternity". It will be an Isometric RPG based on story primarily, much like Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights.
I will be adding on to this informational post, I just woke up an hour ago with the idea to post this so I'll be posting regularly when I wake up fully. |

| PAX (Penny Arcade Expo): Similar to E3, PAX is a convention for gamers that takes place in various months held in both Seattle, Washington and Boston, Massachusetts. It was created by the authors of the Penny Arcade webcomic because they wanted to attend a show that gave equal attention to console, computer, and tabletop gamers. |

I'll just go ahead and post information about sidestream games that are at least somewhat enjoyable now.
RIFT: Very similar to WoW but with much prettier graphics. If you played vanilla/TBC WoW RIFT is very similar to it. Its first expansion is coming out this month if I recall correctly. It has 4 classes (Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Mage) and 8 (soon 9) 'souls' or sub-classes. Each combination is viable even for end-game raids and PvP. |

| @kunz, I never once said anything about killing casual players, I said that companies are losing their niche audiences for making their games worse and easier so that casuals and people less good at video games can play and enjoy them to make the cycle repeat. |

| Casuals are people who DO play CoD and Battlefield all day and who DO throw a tantrum over being 'MLG'. Casuals are people who complain about games not being easy, accessible, and simple. Casuals are people who play on the easiest difficulty without any intention on having a challenging game. |

Bungie: Started the widely loved Halo video game series. Cranked out decent games for people who like FPS games like Halo CE and 2, but after 3, it got a bit repetitive. Currently working with 343 Industries on Halo 4. 343 Industries: A partner with Bungie who helped to make the Halo series, though they don't really get a credit in the opening of the game like Bungie does.

To be honest, I really like the Halo series. I know a lot about it. I've browsed through Halo Nation about an hour a day for the past few months.

| Morrowind: An objectively better game than Skyrim that the casuals who believe this to be correct vice versa ignore because it is an older game with graphics to match. It is a deeper game both mechanically and in terms of gameplay. |
