depends
dungeon master requires having a bunch of books (which you can get for free as pdfs) and knowing a lot of information
but its pretty fun to think up dungeons, traps, boss towers, etc.
being a player is easier but you dont get to be as creative |

you should
the only real complaint that i have about it is that a lot of the best books and content is in different versions
so using it all isnt easy |

Not the way I play.
When I play with my brother, you are rewarded for outwitting and finding loop holes.
Just as creative as what he is, just that the GM has to set rules and whatnot. |

I used to play D&D with some friends and i was always the dungeon master
Once two of my friends attacked the captain of a boat who was secretly a lvl 21 lich disguised as a slender robed figure and guess what the guy who attacked the lich survived while the guy who just wanted to pay up died . One of my friend had like the funniest attacks and used only things like brooms and chairs . Once he rolled a 20 on an attacked on a high level dragonborn NPC and killed it by "scrubbing his face using his mace "
Hey man don't you touch my belt , standing in the sun i'm about to melt ! |

Is it possible to play it with things made by yourself or do you need to buy a set/board? |

you usually need a hexagon map
copies of the main books (dm handbook, monster manual, etc.) or pdfs of them
miniatures (anything can really be used for them)
and the dice

I mean, he'll think about it. If he doesn't like it he'll punish you using the story, or he just would just won't let you and you have to come up with a new creative way to do it.
It isn't like he'll get a dragon to come out of the ground and smite you.
Like I was a warlock that wasn't too smart, I pledged my soul to the evil god, then I pledged my soul to the netural god of the sea.
Later on the evil go fought me, I pissed on his alter he got hurt and I pledged to the good god. And became Light-Log instead of Grey-Log. That was a fun story. |

"you usually need a hexagon map "
You don't need one.
We just make it up with a piece of paper and our minds.
He played with this one program to make a map for his new games.
I haven't played with him since this summer. But now that I can use my PC now, I can play now. |

I recommend you just make your own rules and guidelines. Base it off of some D&D aspects, and some other pen and paper and dice games.
That is what we do when ever we want to play a role playing game. |
