for me, it's when it gets too unrealistic
seems like a weird thing for rpg since most of them are entirely unrealistic, but it really puts me off
like, i feel mages are far too overpowered in most fantasy rpgs they're often unrestricted entirely in the game's worlds and just overall are usually overpowered in the traditional sense
it just ruins the feel of the game for me
one of the reasons i enjoy dragon age so much is because the mages are kept in line due to the citizens realistic fear of their power, and even then they overall don't feel overpowered (at least past non arcane warriors)
one thing da fails to capture (for me) is the fact that casting spells would realistically drain energy from the user
in some areas it captures it (such as wynne in da:o casting a barrier spell and stating she got weary from it at times) but overall it feels a bit absent from the games
also when things seem unrealistically large, like in DA:I how the avvar (a human tribe, cousins to the playable humans) are just gigantic compared to the playable humans
like legitimately at least 2' taller and overall a lot larger
i mean i get that they would be larger, but they are just gigantic and it feels a bit unrealistic
something that i enjoy though is how your characters are mentioned from game to game (in da ii they mention the hero of ferelden, your character from da:o, and in da:i they mention hawke (from da ii) and the hero of ferelden, as well as certain companions crossing over between games)
it just overall makes the game feel more complete, yknow?
anyways what puts you off from rpgs? |

high encounter rates
filler events (e.g. 99% of persona 4 golden)
boring story
annoying dungeon puzzles that dont belong in the rpg game (high encounter rates make this much worse)
easy gameplay that makes having any gameplay at all pointless

| immersion-ruining things (loading screens, people saying "save often" or "press the >BLANK< button to open your inventory!!!") and peoples voices changing due to not enough voice acting (like in oblivion, "eye needs wone mor coyn to get meself a pare of shooes" then they say "I heard so-and-so was doing this, that's so strange of him!" |

The fact that they aren't FPS'. -IGN
In all seriousness, I get put off from an RPG when the characters and story simply aren't engaging enough to hold my attention, or even worse, if they're cliches. |

when the game tries to give you dialogue choices but either restricts you to only one "choice," the choices don't actually affect the dialogue at all, or just unreasonable choices
like in skyrim, when you first encounter the companions aela is like "we're the companions we do ____" and your choices are a) wow can i join!!1 b) sounds lame
wtf |

| It's not a deal breaker, but I'm less inclined to be interested in an RPG when it's standard fantasy. Dragons, gnomes, elves, stuff like that. It's kind of boring to me. I like different settings like modern times, or space. Just something not the same fantasy over and over. |

I despise fantasy rpgs.
I always get really skeptical when I look at a game like Skyrim(Skyrim is good, but after looking at risen ....) |

games that require a lot of grinding i.e. dragon quest 9 there's a postgame feature of fighting the "legacy bosses", which are bosses from older dragon quest games that you can choose to give experience to make stronger this sounds cool, but all of the better gear is locked behind 1% drops from these bosses which already require ridiculous amounts of grinding to take on
there is a method to make your grinding much, much faster by getting an incredibly rare grotto map that just so happens to include a metal king slime only floor, and one mks' exp drop is worth 10 lms, which is the fastest method if you don't have an mks map |

Not enough unique dialogue options. Barely any character customization. |

Immersion breaking things like loading screens and constant "PRESS THIS TO DO THAT"
Little-to-no character customization
Choices and dialogue that pretend to be options but all lead to the same outcome
Excessive grinding (spending hours and hours just beating the same enemy into the ground over and over isn't fun)
Too high encounter rates
Railroading, linearity, and little content on one hand. OTOH, excessive filler. |

i prefer this tbh most endings in games have one good ending, and the other/rest are just bad

>Can you prove anything from an RPG is unrealistic? CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
World of Warcraft. DOTA. Borderlands. That's all the proof you need.
Also I start to hate RPGs, like WoW or LoL when it's all like "PAY 2 PLAI PAST LVL 20" Just make a subscription service like other games and not allow un-subscribed players to to something, not a pay-to-play and pay-to-win game. One more thing: FETCH QUESTS.
I hate fetch quests so much, and so does almost everybody else on here.
