It stands for "Distributed Denial of Service"
All the hacker is doing is going into your router's configurations and shutting down all your ports.
Simply, you have to go into your router's CLI and manually open them all up with a simple command.
However, if they sniff your packets, they may get a hold of some of your personal information...

a distributed denial of service attack involves sending packets of data to a router at a very fast rate to the point where it can't process it all, causing it to go slower or even break.
proxies and VPNs are good because they take the load of the attack and filter it out, basically:
server -> client without proxy server -> proxy -> client with proxy
probably messed some of that info up, but that's the jist of it
